32" LCD full-HD TV with DVI input?

I'm after a new screen for an older (3 years old) media centre that does not have HDMI output.

What I really wanted was a 28" TV/Monitor, but it seems that nobody makes anything that small any more! The closest I could get was LG's 27" M2794DP TV/monitor, but the reviews do not rate the picture quality too well...

So although it would be slightly bigger than I want, I tried to find a 32" LCD screen with DVI input - and failed.

Does anyone know of one - preferably one that gets good reviews?

The other solution would be to get a graphics card with HDMI out, but I can't find anything (under £50 - I stopped looking at that price limit) which is not PCI-e - the media centre only has PCI.

That's because DVI is a bit limited with no sound and offers no benefit over HDMI.

    Just use a HDMI-DVI converter.

I have one of these, it is great. http://www.richersounds.com/product/lcd-tv/hitachi/ut32mh70/hita-ut32mh70

It only has 1 HDMI and a RGBinput, it does not have a TV tuner

Ok - thanks, I'll look into a converter. I didn't know they were available. (It doesn't worry me that DVI has no sound, as that goes via Toslink to a separate audio processor and speakers).

I don't think that would work for me, as it needs to be used as a monitor as well (to do updates and general housekeeping on the media centre) and I don't think the resolution would be good enough to do that comfortably (i.e. without eye strain!).

THIS LG 32" has DVI. I have the 5000 series and it has more inputs than you can shake a stick at.
  • You don't need an actual converter as such. HDMI and DVI are both digital. All you should need is a suitable cable like this one.

Thanks bingo bango - I'd looked at quite a few other LGs and assumed that none of their products supported DVI. It seems to get really good reviews as well.

Taff - thanks, but I'm still a bit wary about adapters and converter cables, having failed to get RGB over SCART to work on another media centre (even though the TV is supposed to support it)... If possible I want native DVI on the TV, because if it doesn't work properly I know to blame the TV and send it back!

Id buy a hdmi one. Its future proof and should work absolutely fine

  • I understand your concern Fwor, but actually HDMI and DVI-D are the same thing picture-wise. The main difference is the connector, and DVI does not carry sound.

That being said, I would agree with aliEnRIK about going for all out HDMI, mainly because DVI is slowly being replaced by it.

Ok, having read the HDMI wiki, it looks like you are both right - a cable or converter should be fine quality-wise.

And having looked into bingo bango's suggested LG, it doesn't have a DVI socket anyway! The user manual says that you have to use a DVI to HDMI cable for DVI sources, which is no different from any other HDMI-equipped screen...

It's a shame, because that would have made choosing the LG easy. Now I'm back to the "what's the most highly rated 32 inch full HD LCD TV" research again, but I guess that will stop me making any impulse TV purchases for a while!
