You're asking people on a very well known, public forum to advise you to break the law. What do you want people to say?

I like a drink but I can't see why it would be an issue for her to skip it for a week away with her parents.
  • If you can I would wait and go in Sept/Oct ............ that would give you more time to save up and then you could buy more booze ! If you could include the B'day even more special ( In years to come "What did you do for your 21st" ? She would be able to say "I went to NYC".

Tell you what ..... borrowing someone's ID would have been a lot easier than struggling around town in the biggest platform boots one could buy ! (only 5'2") Combine that with a tank top and penny collar shirt ............. I was a real catch !!! Ah the 70's ...... Slade ,The Sweet, T Rex !!!!!

Aah yes that age old chestnut. Renting an illegal apartment will be cheaper than a legal hotel. Obviously, they're making money, not paying taxes to the City (15% of hotel prices are tax...)

There are plenty of other ways to save money too.. Why not steal your food from the supermarkets because that is a cheaper proposition than buying it. I bet you don't do that because that's something totally different, but you are considering renting an illegal apartment? Well, you're stealing from the locals who need affordable places to live.

A hotel, if something goes wrong, the hotel will attempt to give you a resolution.

In an illegal apartment, they'll probably ignore your request, and keep your money, they don't care. AirBnB don't really do much either, so don't think you're getting much protection, if it isn't what is advertised. Pay anything by paypal and you're not protected because it is a service not a product. Also, apartment rentals expect money before you move in, whereas hotels you will pay on check-out.

What is wrong with some of the more affordable hotels? Why is it you want to break the law and annoy the locals? They need places to live, and you're making it worse.

Country Inn & Suites, Long Island City

The above is a great option so close to Manhattan, and many people choose to stay in legal accommodation.

Airbnbs growing pains in NYC where half its listings are illegal rentals.

The simplicity of this is easy to see using Airbnb’s search tool. Searching for a two-night rental over the weekend of January 18 in New York City you get a total of 6,176 options if you don’t specify room type, price, or any other options. If you click “Entire home/apt” there are 3,200 results, all of which are illegal under New York law.

You're just convincing yourself or attempting to wind me up, I don't know, but do what you want, but it is illegal if you go the apartment route and you know that. Most people don't, but with very little research you find out.

Oh come on, a bit melodramatic "stealing from the locals"!

I think I'll take my chances.

Abatement- I can't believe that you are knowingly breaking the law with forethought! Well actually I can, some people just don't care at all about it, or the effect it could have on others. But I thought the people on MSE had sense.

An of course you are stealing from the locals, if you are not paying city tax to the city, who do you think is going to suffer?

Search the NYC forum on tripadvisor for apartment rentals- LOTS if horror stories!

We were considering an apartment rental, did some research, realised they were illegal and not regulated (unless hosted- that may be an option). We got a hotel instead. Much rather pay a bit more a night upfront , than have to find a hotel and pay top dollar after being thrown out on the streets! (Which has happened!)
