Hey
For a quick bite to eat in Times Square, I'd go to Dannys Deli, literally next door to the Edison Hotel in TS. We went there for breakfast, took out and ate in times square on the red tables and chairs. It was beautiful.0 -
Hi Jtr2803
I read your trip report with interest. Sounds like you had a great time. We are staying at the Crowne Plaza TS this year. What's it really like? We are a bit worried about the location, as in noise and how busy it might be. Also, brekky is not included, can you recommend place to eat?
Any tips on location and access to tourist sites and where to eat would be grately appreciated.
TIA
For some reason my review of the hotel hasn't yet been posted but some of the resturant ones have. That's trip advisor for you!
Yes TS was busy but I am still surprised by how busy people make out it is, I am sure that going in Feb meant it wasn't as busy as it is in more popular months.....but, really, no busier than somewhere like Lakeside shopping centre on a weekend.
No problems with noise (We were 23rd floor), just the odd siren but no real 'street' noise, just a bit of wind occasionally.
They have a stall in the lobby doing pastries and coffees to take away but we never used that or the restaurant. We ate at Cafe Edison three time (it was cheap and cheerful, not amazing but did the job) and Fluffys Cafe which was a ten minute walk and was fab. I had book marked Cranberry Deli to try but just didn't get round to it! For dinner we stayed local (against advice) and ate in Pongsri Thai, Tony's Di Napoli and Virgils BBQ, all of which I would happily eat in again.
Very happily married on 10th April 2013

Always somewhere to get brekkie in NYC no need to worry about getting fed and i am not one for walking more than 20 yards for food and coffee in the morning - Noise Times square has the wooping of emergency trucks constantly but you do get used to them . - It buzzes all day & night but slows down after 12 ish. Steak houses . I always talk up Don Shulas Staekhouse as being the best ive ever had . My good friend has just returned saying although Shulas was great St Andrews Was even better with a massive list of malts too. Seem like a good warm night in there for me. http://www.donshula.com/

Just back from NYC this am and stayed at the Edison, and ate at Denny's deli next door, so I second that suggestion, though avoid the oatmeal! Great wee buffet style option where you fill a container of salad or fruit. Do bear in mind it's pricier nearer the tourist hotspots. We stocked up on snacks and treats to bring home in Target (opposite barclays center Brooklyn) and the family dollar tree ( down right hand side of Yankee stadium, Bronx)
The boxes of nerds, mike and ike etc were $1 compared to $3.99 near TS. Also lucky charms were $3 instead of $6.
Food wise, I loved chipotle. One burrito bowl for around £7 filled me for a day and was so deliciousalternatively, it would feed two for lunch easily.
The Wholefoods market in Columbus circle also had a delicious buffet style thing going on for v reasonable prices.
Staying in the Edison - I wouldn't recommend tbh. We were in a non-refurbished room and it was pretty grotty. The air con placement meant there were gaps to outside. The carpet was wrinkled and was a bit of a trip hazard, and we got shocks every time we touched a door handle! The sheets were torn and the cover had what appeared to be a blood stain. We received dirty ( laundered but stained with makeup and blood) towels several times. Lack of in-room safe was annoying. And I would def not recommend trying to shower between 6-9am or in the evenings as the water goes from freezing to scalding in seconds constantly. V v unpleasant. Luckily I woke around 5am and so could shower then. It's def not like the hotel site photos either.
It's saving grace was location and delightful staff.
I must say, while it was very cold there, the only time we queued for more than 10 minutes was for the American natural history museum and that's prob cause it was Presidents Day and everyone was off work. The 10 minute or less queues were generally due to security measures or waiting for lifts ( Rockefeller Center /empire state)
I highly highly recommend Kim the Rockefeller tour guide, and Justin the grand central guide ( latter was free, former included in NY Pass)0 -
jtr good trip report . Have to admit i do tend to walk rather than subway regardless (we have a wheelchair user with us ) but even without him I walk and stop off or go down somewhere that looks interesting then off on another direction.(or pub) Glad you returned to the place that were shut too . St Pats is great. hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world :cool:0

Just wanna recommend a few guide books that I've found which have been so great for helping us plan our visit, if there are any young(ish) couples going who want to see something a bit "alternative" then The Zinesters Guide to NYC and the NYC Little Black Book have some great suggestions, Zinesters Guide has a great section on free/cheap stuff to do if you're on a budget and all of it sounds amazing!:heart2:0

Wow, you have had a REALLY bad experience of The Edison. Did you complain about the state of the room?
I've stayed there twice and each time, the rooms were nice and clean. There have been some issues with the plumbing of the showers mind, they felt like a water jet at times. Definitely left the shower feeling clean aha! The staff there are really great, on my previous trip we left at 3am and they were still cheery and polite! Im going to stay there again this time, I sincerely hope I don't get the experience you had!0 -
Just a quick question, as this is the first time I've been to NY on my own-ish.
I remember whilst on the plain, just as we were about to land they got us all to sign some forms, possibly green forms.
Does anyone have any idea what these are?0
