New Yorker is a good hotel in a good place but its neither here or there and unless you want to visit MSG or Macys The New Yorker is a tad further from the touristy hot spots of Time Square (but IMO) Its closer to the flatiron district which has a good vibe to walk & eat im not a big shopper more a people watcher and beer/foodie and would rather spend a hour in B&M than A&F. your mum will be ok at any of the ones mentioned for a nights stay . Is she returning by air from JFK or Newark

Thanks. She is staying at the new Yorker for 3 nights pre cruise because we got a great deal. She wanted a hotel nearby so she could find exactly where it was so when disembarked from the cruise she would know exactly where she was going, she's a bit neurotic like that! She is flying back from Newark day after.

We have now booked our hotel (Grand Hyatt - using Avios to get half price) so are now planning on how to spend our 3 and a bit days in NYC at the end of July.

We should arrive mid-afternoon on a Sunday. The hotel is next to Grand Central Station so we should be able to visit there and also walk to the UN Building on the afternoon/evening we arrive and get those crossed off our list leaving us 3 days.

I'm guessing it would be sensible to group together the various attractions into 3 areas and do one area each day (not necessarily in this order)
    1. Central Park/Bloomingdales/FAO Swarz/Tiffanys(because nothing bad could ever happen there;))
    2. ToR/ESB/Public Library/Times Square/5th Ave
    3. Brooklyn Bridge/Battery Park/SoL/Ellis Island/WTC Memorial
Also hoping to see a show one evening
Does this seem like a sensible plan?
We are first time visitors and unlikely to return, so want to fit in as much as possible....

    Anything obvious we've missed?

We will be travelling with our 16yr old daughter (on leaving NYC we are collecting a car and then travelling around Ohio & Pennsylvania for 10 days doing various theme parks :D)

I havent met a better road grid system and so long as you know where your going you will always get there. Plus once your there the landmarks for where you are and where you want to be are obvious. Take the next poster staying at the Hyatt (great hotel BTW) If your unsure just look up find the Chrysler then head for grand central its there.Although if your underneath any big building you might not see it which leads me to a conversation ME "excuss me can you tell me which way to the Chrysler Building" LOCAL "well the only Chrysler building i know of is that one up there" pointing straight up.

  • I've been to Woodbury and wasn't that impressed tbh. I don't think I would go back. I'd say for the brands your looking no its not worth the distance or the money ($30-40 ? is it off the top of my head) need to concider the cost of transport as your bargins might not be cheap as you think. If you had alot of money and wanted 'bargins' on Chanel, Dior, Gucci etc then yes its prob worth a look.

Jersey Gardens on the otherhand is vey good. I've been twice and will be going on each of my future tips to NY. There is lot's of good brands A&F being one of my fav don't get many of them in the US and concidering how expensive the flagship is on 5th.

It is only $9 return on bus and much closer - approx 30mins away.

    Hi thatsfabulous,

Not been to NYC before but interested in Jersey Gardens Shopping Mall, how easy is it to get there from say the Port Authority Bus terminal? and then obviously back again. Like the other poster we were interested in Woodbury Common but at $42 a head through Gray Line this looks a cheaper option as long as the connections are ok.

    Thanks

  • Just got back. A few comments on things :-

    Big Apple Greeter (highly recommended)
    Trump Soho hotel (highly recommended)

Subway - great easy to use
Taxis - hard to find one!

Georgios restaurant - hells kitchen well nice.

Dial 7 cars- crap indeed. Rude drivers who have a bad attitude, try to overcharge and moan at low tip when they do. also beware of these drivers stopping as if they're a taxi and tryng to rip you off (one stopped once and offered us fare of $20 - it cost $8 in a proper cab)

I am shocked that that, because I have used Dial7 this time and they were lovely with us.

Interesting. Legally they're not allowed to do that, because it could be classed as Money Laundering!

Hmmm, indeed. We tried several times to change them at the high street travel agents and no one would touch them, but at the airport 2 agents changed us 2x $200

We has miserable asian fella. Grunted a few times, then when we got there - just sat there and mumbled the price.

We had a coupon which he hadnt taken the price off. Tried to tell him he just sat there and kept saying the same price. He got even more miserable when I gave him zero tip even borderline aggressive.
