We (myself, wife and daughter age 13) stayed at the Distrikt Hotel, just next door on 40th St West. I had seen some reviews on Trip Advisor as to the proximity of the parole office and "DVD" shop, but have to say that we didn't feel uncomfortable at all, and in fact, we felt extremely safe wherever we were in NY. We thought it was a great location - only about 10 minutes walk to Times Square, 15 mins to Top of The Rock and Grand Central, about 45 mins to Central Park.
The subway station was also at the end of the block which took us down to Battery Park, and one day brought us back from the Central Park area.
Yep, this. It is not something that bothered us whatsoever, its hardley Amsterdam with everything on show, and you know what, I didnt even notice the parole office lol!Its certainly not the prettiest of streets, but the Hotel is great, breakfast is great and location for us was spot on.

hi everyone, wondering if anyone can help or at least point me in the right direction.
me and my oh are looking to go to new york in feb and im making my list of things that we would like to see and this thread looks like it would be a big help.
Can i ask a quick question or can someone point me in how to search for things just in the new york thread.
I am looking for any tips on the empire state building, ive seen some posts on people saying the top of the rock has a better view and you can also get a picture of the empire state building, but i would also like to go up the empire state building as well and wondering if anyone has any tips for actually going there.
is it better to get tickets before hand, is it better to get the express tickets, also what times are the day are quieter?
thanks in advance for any help
We decided not to do ESB, and just did TOTR, it was great. Walked straight in straight in to the cool glass top elevator! No waiting at all. We went late afternoon and had daylight, sunset and the nighttime up there, It was pretty quiet at the top too, although I guess it was -10 lol!! Brrrr!!
I dont think Id bother doing both, but TOTR was awesome!0 -
Hi
Just wondering how long you give yoursself to get through customs etc when you arrive into JFK.
My flight lands at 15.30 and I was going to book my transfers soon but unsure what time to make pick up.
Thanks
I have to say also, it was the warmest welcome to any country I have ever been to! :T0 -

My daughter and her friend booked ESB express tickets in the UK prior to their holiday. It worked out great because you can use them any time and bypass the queues (and they can get pretty long).0 -
We didnt bother with booking anything, we just walked out and grabbed a cab. It took us maybe 45 mins including disembarking the plane to getting in the cab. Pretty quick, I thought it would take ages.
I have to say also, it was the warmest welcome to any country I have ever been to! :T
Thanks Hels I was going to book atransfer as there are 5 of us and won't fit in a cab does anyone else have suggestions as what time to book transfer for, we arrive into JFK at 15.30 thanks.0 -

If you're booking Carmel or Dial 7, then I'd book it for 16:30Thanks Hels I was going to book atransfer as there are 5 of us and won't fit in a cab does anyone else have suggestions as what time to book transfer for, we arrive into JFK at 15.30 thanks.
You can get a cab that fits 5, you'll just wait a bit longer at the head of the queue for a minivan.

So excited,we booked our 2nd trip this morning, cannot wait to go back(first went July 2010...great holiday, but very warm/humid..middle of a heatwave apparantly),anyway this time we've booked for October(school holidays),2 adults and 2 teens(14 and 16)...not staying in as posh a hotel as last time(The New Yorker),but we've managed to get a suite at the Salisbury near central park...7 nights for all 4 of us (flying with Aer Lingus,=Scotland,to Dublin,to JFK) for just over £3400,via Thomas cook website, works out around £866 per head..could've got cheaper if we'd book a room only or a cheaper hotel, but were happy with this, think its a good deal..Slimming World..Wk1,..STS,..Wk2,..-2LB,..Wk3,..-3.5lb,..Wk4,..-2.5,..Wk5,..-1/2lb,Wk6,..STS,..Wk7,..-1lb.
Week 10,total weightloss is now 13.5lbs Week 11 STSweek 14(I think)..-2, total loss now 1 stone exactly
GOT TO TARGET..1/2lb under now weigh 10st 6.5(lost 1st 3.5lbs)0 -

Daughter stayed at the Salisbury last year and was very pleased with the room and it was in an excellent location for her. Staff were very good. There is a diner next door to hotel which was good for breakfasts and a Starbucks opposite. Ten minutes walk from Times Square and Central Park. She has been a couple of times before and reckoned this was the best location she had stayed in. Wants to stay there again next time she goes. Hope you enjoy it. (I would add daughter is fairly hard to please so it must have been OK).0 -

Do you really need suggestions on how to keep yourself entertained for 6ish hours?
And what to see?
Given we dont know you or anything about you how can anyone answer that question, i could say "go to the guggenheim" and you could rebuff "but i dont like art" etc etcLive each day like its your last because one day you'll be right0
