Tipping does normally work but you have to be bold but discreet. 4 nights new yorker. Before you check in proper pull the main check in manager aside give him your passport show him IT IS YOUR BIRTHDAY have a $50 inside ask them if there is a chance of a nice room, with a nice view & smile.

Hey, I've been reading this thread for a long time now but only just registered.
Quick question, wondering if anyone could give any advice. Me and my girlfriend are going to New York for 4 nights, 6th - 10th April. How much would people recommend for spending money, per person? Just want to do the usual things, see a show, esb, statue of liberty, and meals. Obviously want to do some shopping, but don't include this when giving a recommended budget please..

    Thanks a lot!

I like the New Yorker -Not top notch but not rubbish either (and I won't pay for top notch in NYC as all I'm going to be doing is sleeping there anyway). I'd stay there again.

Location is fine -subway literally right outside and if you want to walk to Times Square-very do-able. (One evening half of us walked and the others cabbed it-with all the traffic the walkers got there first)

never stayed at the New Yorker but it must be the most asked about hotel in NYC , Seen it as a option and never turned it down just always got a better deal price wise elsewhere . Google the history of the New Yorker and the people who have stayed(lived )there its got history in buckets . I would stay there its a ok location but more important not far from anywhere and very close to the subway
