vikki looks interesting but some of the "regular" Prices of over $400+ per night for a three star (overrated normally also) hotel in slightly outta the way place just doesnt go. But if you can get a few nights for the $120/130/140 mark your doing ok. (went in to buy a suit recently with over 50%off still wanted £230 for the suit RRP for the normal suit was £499 B0110CKS:cool: hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world :cool:0

Oh yeah definately agree with that. I'm not saying the rooms are worth the full value they're putting on them, or that they'd even be any good, just wondering if anyone had ever tried one of these mystery places and managed to bag a bargain. I'd have no concerns about doing it on Hotwire as long as I had sufficent info to make an educated guess at what I was getting, but not sure I'd be willing to risk taking a punt on one of these without any info to go on.0 -
I've never used bookit.com at all, for secret hotels or otherwise, as I've either booked through quikbook for a cancellable rate, or the hotel direct.
I have used quikbook for a secret room, and with them, it's kinda easy to work out which is the actual hotel involved. I guessed once on TA for someone who was looking for an NYC hotel, and guessed for myself once for my San Francisco hotel, both times correctly, so with them it is easier than say Last Minute.
Now, I could easily say the room I book for San Fran was a bargain. I got a room for $115 a night, and currently on the hotels website it is $306 a night. However, on quikbook, the Secret Room is still there for the same price. It's supposed to be a prepaid non cancel, however, my card has not been charged yet, which is good!
On the other hand, I have haggled and booked a hotel room myself, at a rate that isn't advertised anywhere. I got a room at the Hotel On Rivington for 4 nights after my stay in SF. According to the hotels website, the room rate is $319 a night. Quikbook doesn't offer the room I have, the class of room lower to the one I've got booked is $269. I've got my room for $200 a night. (cancellable).
So, you've got to weigh things up. You can get a bargain with haggling, and asking the question, to see if they can lower their rate. You may, like me, get lucky, however, you could book a secret hotel, and end up with a "bargain" however you want to call it, but you cannot cancel these.
If I could be bothered, I'd research and make an educated guess for you, however, to be fair, you'd have to ask me about one or two specific secret hotels, rather than a list of 6, as that's just a bit too much for me to mess about with.

Virgin have got some very good deals on premium economy at the moment. Yesterday, I booked outbound economy, and return premium for £465 in May. Economy both ways was £385. These were using miles plus money. Saves the extra £32 charge for the 2nd bag on the return too.0

Miles plus money? so for someone with zero miles there isn't a deal?0
-
Not as good no, but for the many people that do have miles, there is.
Any harm in this information being in this thread M4RKM?
If i found a very good deal flying from Glasgow should i not post about it, as only people in Scotland would find it useful?0 -
You should post the number of miles it takes and the price difference between a revenue ticket and a miles + cash ticket to make a proper value judgment.
On another topic, is it not time for a NYC 2011 thread?0 -
Miles plus money is more niche than flying from any airport at a cash price. Without giving people the standard cash only fare, I just feel it's a bit of a non topic of conversation, hence me spurring you all into a topic of conversation. No harm, just trying to find out how good a deal this actually is.
I"m 6'4 tall, and find standard economy for a flight of 8 hours bearable, so the upgrade price to me, is money wasted, not money saved.
Now, is it time for a 2011 thread, well, It was mentioned by someone when I asked that very question that it wasn't needed, and next time I create a thread, not to have a date on it...
Personally, I think yearly threads are useful, as then you can pick out good bits and create a better front page post, but at just over 100 pages, is this too unbearable for new people wanting NYC help?

Can I just ask about sales tax- I'd it just in NYC and not in jersey? Considering Woodbury commons- if there is no tax it might be worth it. am I right to think it us only taxable if over 110 dollars? Think I read it somewhere on here!0

I dont think it matters if we have a new thread or not. All information and not much new is still in the old thread from last year . A new thread would be good but every other page we would still have the question "best way to get into manhattan from JFK" "somewhere to eat in times square" "Does America serve beer" If anyone fancy setting up a new New York Sticky i will be there with my tuppence worth. hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world :cool:0
