You should have a 'package manager' of some sort, which you can use to do the installing for you. I think Fedora-based Linuxes use the 'RPM Package Manager'.

If not, try the terminal command

    sudo Apt-Get install Firefox

Press enter and you'll be asked for your password. I believe that Linpus can use the 'Apt-get' system. It's far simpler than messing about with tarballs (tar.gz files). It will look for the latest version of Firefox and install it itself. If this doesn't work, try the instructions below.

I think Fedora and Fedora-based things use the yum installer, so:
    sudo yum install firefox

if anything. Also, I must echo whoever said change the distribution. I don't like Linpus, Ubuntu netbook remix would serve you much better

Ubuntu netbook remix is a version of the Ubuntu operating system designed especially for netbooks.

You can get it from here: http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download-netbook (also has instructions on how to install - but don't forget to back your files up!)

Ubuntu is one of, if not the most popular linux versions; and so there's a lot of support for it. As an example, for your problem, Firefox is updated as and when a new update becomes available through Ubuntu's update manager (it pops up on screen, you type your password in and it does the rest).

is it complicated to download and install?

To be honest, I gave up using the Firefox version supplied by the various distros a long time ago.

Instead I just download the latest version from the Firefox website and extract the tar.bz2 archive to a folder in my home directory.

I then run it from there. Setting my destop environment to use the path to that binary as the default browser.

I then have better control over what version I use, and can update when and how I please without interfering with the system as a whole.

Would also work fine, but Puppy (in my experience anyway) is that bit more complicated to update and install programs on, down to it's reliance on .pup packages. (OK, it can use others, but it's a pain). Not used xpud, as I'm not a Firefox user and have no desire for an OS based around it

Not at all. The hardest bit is probably getting it onto a USB stick to boot from, which will take about 5 minutes and has a program to do it for you
