In fact the Sex Offenders Register covers such a wide range of things, any public availability of it would be very dangerous.

The one the OP probably really means is "List 99", which is the list of people specifically barred from working with children.

    Basic info on both:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Violent_and_Sex_Offender_Register

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_99

You will note that although it is known as the Sex Offender's Register, it also includes violence.

That being the case why is he asking about finding out who a !!!!!phile is?

'list 99' wouldnt give this information, theres 1001 reasons why you could be on this list, I'm on it, for possession of a controlled substance.

Why would you want to know? Rhetorical question really, but if you're not a parent, what would you do with the information?

I've just googled 'Sarah's law'. Check out www.forsarah.com - may have the info you're after - albeit not necessarily a balanced view.

do you have to be a parent to what to know if someone near you is on the register ?

in my view there should not be a register they should be locked up for good then we would not need to keep track of them
If you dont like me remember its mind over matter, I dont mind and you dont matter ;)

I don't know about this register. I've always thought the focus on known threats will cause people to let their guard down to unknown threats. Certainly big charities are talking about a "false sense of security".

It's a bit like those very specific warnings against scams. Many of these warnings are hoaxes or out of date. But also, I think, focussing on specific scams, rather than developing the general skills to spot scams will leave you wide open to the scams you've not heard about. In the same case, worring about specific individuals, rather than generally taking sensible (not over protective) steps to protect your children will do more harm than good in the long run.

This is just a personal opinion.

OK for anyone who doesn't know, anyone who has any contact with any kids (which must mean unsupervised i am guessing) can be found out about by any parent, i do not think that this info is available to anyone who does not have a child worker, but as gossip goes and housewives chatter i will bet that there are many smashed windows in the future as i do not think that these people will remain secret from everyone else once found out. There is a Megans law i found where all info is totally public to anyone, i would think that this is better as it not only makes a kiddie fiddler think twice it also alerts everyone in the area - i think kids safety comes first and its my opinion that we should use Megans Law instead. Least now i know how to find out about it, i still think you need to ask the cops for the info though, there is also a trial in Warwickshire going on where all the info is available to parents already.
    Owed out = lots.

This is the problem, your making guesses then chatting amongst housewives like chinese whispers. As already mentioned a lot of people are on the list for various offences. Whilst I agree to a point that registered sex offenders for crimes against children should be made public it can be very dangerous as people do not think through their actions. Too many people have been mis-informed and acted on it and innocent people get hurt simply because people get 2 + 2 and come up with 6. Your chatter as you call it is easily manipulated, its no different to when John went fishing and caught a 5lb trout, by the time hes been down the pub and told his mates its turned into a 30lb trout...........
