    shop cake - uniform, spongy and synthetic - delicious!! My cousins, whose mum didn't bake, used to get really excited about my mum's homemade cake...kids eh?!

    Now I take after my mum and am re-learning/remembering all her skills...and it's so useful to be able to ask her for her tips. She still teases us about being happy to eat homemade cake now though!!

    That reminds me of a talk I went to by Andrew Whitley (who started the Village Bakery). His children were brought up on lovely homemade organic bread - but used to really like the white sliced stuff from the shop :rotfl::rotfl:
  • My mum was always pretty OS with food anyway, and she had me baking cakes from about the age of 3!
    I've always lived within my means, i.e. if i ever wanted something I'd have to save up for it and it's kind of ingrained into me now.
    I'm at university and my flatmates all tend to buy prepackaged food whoch kind of makes me feel like the odd one out, cooking everything from scratch :o I'm very proud of my cooking though and made my flatmate a birthday cake and now whenever I bake anything they all seem to gravitate to the kitchen!! :rotfl:
    I'm trying to be more OS in other ways, with my cleaning products and clothes etc, but at the moment mainly concentrating on the food aspect, meal planning etc.
    Has been great reading this thread and really does feel as if we have an OS family going here :A
    Proud to be OS :j
  • I was recently catching up with an old friend, that i hadnt seen or heard from in YEARS

    dont know how it came about but we got on the subject of toothpaste
    he said he bought colgate in a pump, and i said to him that it was double the price for the same amount in a tube

    he looked at me for ages, and said, "you never used to be that tight":eek:

    I pondered this, as my 1st reaction was, "i'm not tight, far from it"
    and was saddened this was how it appeared

    i find my OS lifestyle affords me to be more generous than ever, and i do make an incredible amount for people
    my choice to live OS didnt come from financial, but its a huge perk

    I told him to give me a pound, and he did
    i opened the bin and dropped it in
    he stood:eek::eek::eek:

    i walked away, and said, thats what you do:T

    point well proven i think:D
    :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: GENIUS!!!
    Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

    Just think of the payoff too - you'll probably have a much smaller student debt to pay off at the end of it all :)

    I'm a single gal looking for a nice chap, I've had a few dates and it seems that most of the guys I've met all seem to look down on my cooking from scratch, my (attempts) at sewing projects and my desire to find bargains. All they seem to be interested in is clubbing, travelling abroad and going out every night of the week and spending all their dosh before payday rolls around again.

    I'm not one to turn down a holiday or a night out but it's not the be all and end all of my life. I LIKE to stay at home, entertain my friends in my home and I have aspirations of a garden one day to grow things :D

    Can't we have a MSE dating site where like minded souls can find a nice person to meet? I'm not a bad cook, well educated with a good job and I'm really rather presentable ;)

    That's my whinge over and done now, thanks for listening! :rotfl:

    I read your opening line back to front first, and thought you were a guy coming to make an offer to all the smart OSers on this thread!

    Sounds to me as though those 'guys' are all boys! ;) I recommend a man!! Mine is 17 years older than me, much more on my level, and more than able to look after himself, too. I can't understand how there are still guys my age (33), some I went to school with, living the way you describe above. To each their own, and everything, but I just think 'grow up, boys!' I don't know how old you, or these guys are, but there seems to be something in males (apparently) who are living at home longer due to finances, and maturing a lot later...still living their sixth form lifestyle well, well into their twenties and beyond :eek:

    You will find someone who 'gets' the OS ways, and a more mature and less wasteful way of living. An OS dating site - excellent idea!! :T

    It sounds like you're just the sort of woman that many men would love to settle down with - you'll find him one day. I must admit that when I read this bit "All they seem to be interested in is clubbing, travelling abroad and going out every night of the week and spending all their dosh before payday rolls around again." my heart sank, and I was sooooo glad that I'm off the market :rotfl:. I'm like you, I like staying in - my sister used to drag me out to nightclubs when I'd much prefer to stay in and read, or go out to the theatre. I'd sit there all night willing the clock to tick round to when we could go home again :rotfl:. I met my DH on a kibbutz - you might just have to travel abroad to meet your soulmate :D

    Thankyou Loadsabob and Justamum, like the OP, I was having a wobble but I'll be back on form soon ... in fact tonight I'll be off to my Adult Education Cooking class.

    I can cook most things without any problem but being in a class room with others makes it sooooo much more fun :D

    Quiche Lorraine tonight ... never had much luck with pastry as my hands are too warm but it will still taste nice for my lunch tomorrow. Yummy.

    Your post made me smile :). Don't worry - he's out there somewhere ;).

    I was in a charity shop at the weekend and found a wall plate that said "Kissin' don't last; Cookin' do".

    How true is that!! :rotfl::rotfl:
