In my last job, I did have a colleague who would only try home made goodies if he "trusted" the person in question re: their food hygiene - don't quite know what he based it on, as our work never involved any cooking etc...

I am slightly like that aswell :o its not that I dont trust their cooking just if their personal hygiene is questionable. I dont doubt that their food would be lovely but if I doubt they wash their hands after going to the loo(for example :rotfl:) then i prob would steer clear of the food :rotfl:

I have heard of stories from food factories that would make your toes curl:eek: I trust home cooking more than preformed prepacked rubbish every time:D

Factory made cakes taste funny imo - must be all the preservatives. My children love my home baking, and their friends have all (apparently) said that my baking is the nicest they've ever tasted :D (and it's all vegan too!). Maybe they're used to bought stuff? I'm a bit dubious about trying other people's baking though. A few years ago I went to my daughter's school fair. One stall was selling home-made cakes, and I bought a whole stack of vegan cakes. Munching through one I found a hair :eek::eek: which made me feel rather queasy, and it's put me off buying any other home-made food.

I may be an imperfect OSer, but I am still a proud one!

To me there is no such thing. It makes me cringe when I read judgemental posts and people debating who is more OS than the other :o

Zippy - I especially liked your long post:):T you've all given me renewed enthusiasm and motivation as I've been slipping a bit lately:o:)

My Mum made me smile once on this subject - she told a friend she that "Susan makes everything herself" proudly:) I was ever so pleased that she had noticed.:T

Now DS2 who is nearly 18 has shown a little interest in cooking so I'm hoping to teach him to make some cakes to start with. A late start I know but its never too late to learn new things:) he's going to find a recipe he wants to make and we'll take it from there.

thanks again to all who posted.

Thanks Taplady. I hoped it read from the heart - rather than a sermon :o It's lovely to read about your Mum noticing and your DS2 taking interest. M brother is 33-34? and I am starting to teach him to cook from complete basics!

That's funny! And your experience, Ambersuccubus.

Interesting you say this, though, as sometimes I see HM cakes that I want to devour, and other times, when there's a charity cake sale at work, I do look at some and think "hhmmmm....maybe not..." :o Possibly I am a baking snob, and I know just how my stuff tastes, and I know what goes into it. But if it's a friend or family member, somehow I'm generally pretty comfortable with what they offer.

I took buns in recently for the charity bake - to work - when i had a job :rotfl: I then bought the obligatory bag and literally couldn't bring myself to eat them. A combination of very dodgy home baking, and very dodgy shop bought buns!

I am making it a goal to pass OS-iness on more. Last night I taught my brother how to make home made pizza from scratch which he LOVED! I showed him all my frozen ingredients - pizza corner in the freezer :D, and he was totally blown away by the easiness and the taste! :jWhen asked would he do anything differently next time, he said - only trying different toppings!:T

I was always OS deep down as well. I alwas crafted , polished things up and made gifts - I just hadn't developed it properly. Now i have a box of things I keep for future presents and home made gifts- scraps of ribbon, gift tags, cards, newspaper cuttings with persons name in the headline :rotfl: etc, an old calendar cover to make into a framed picture. It's amazing what you can create from very little

I have really enjoyed this thread and peoples stories :D Keep em comin!:j:beer:

There are lots of people like this (me included:o). I noticed it whenever I ran a cake stall - people would nearly always ask who'd baked what?
As someone else has already said, it's to do with the 'Have they washed their hands?' feeling ;)

Zippychick - I loved reading your earlier post on this thread too. Yes, passing OS on has great rewards - for both of you! The pizza thing made me smile. My boyfriend has never been a fan of pizza, but when we made it from scratch he absolutely loved it! He enjoys cooking too...I can't believe we haven't made pizza again since :o
  • It's so very enjoyable to read through the different ideas and views regarding this OS subject, thread or way of life!:D:D
I have realised that lots and lots of other people do sooo much towards achieving a resourceful, pleasurable and rewarding quality of life that when I now go out of my front door I'm looking at the houses with the 40-60" TV screens and shaking my head -its so sad they really don't know what they are missing! Perhaps, I too am being judgemental but I honestly don't mean to be.
I am astounded at the wonderful intelligent observations and comments - just amazing! The experiences are so individual and yet at the same time feel as if part of one big OS family (if that is the right word - I think it is!)
I keep going back and reading the posts through again because each time I chuckle at something else or identify with some other comment -by gum! you lot have knocked me back for six and I'm loving it
May you fill up the great clutterbucket of life and may all of your leaks be in cheese sauce:D

    I'm Loving it!
The last few weeks I have been at home due to ill health. As I have started to feel better, I have been doing lots of cooking, baking cakes and started knitting again.
What is such a surpirse is I am absolutley loving being at home.
I have always been a career girl and worked full time, despite having four kids. I always thought that was me but I have suddenly realised at the grand old age of forty two that its not! Actually being here and having time to talk to the kids and my hubby when they come in from work and school is fantastic. What I love the most is putting a lovely meal out for them that I have made from scratch and that hasn't cost a fortune. My youngest said yesterday 'I hope you never go back to work'. I am honestly a different person:D I can't believe how much more relaxed I feel. My stress levels have come right down:)
I honestly think trying to juggle a high flying job with a large family really contributed to my illness and I am seriously thinking of not going back. Financially it will be a real struggle but I have a few ideas for working part time from home and I am sure I will be able to budget so much better now. Our relationship is much improved now I am not biting his head off every two minutes because I am so stressed out:o Its been a real shock that actually I am an old fashioned girl at heart.
I certainly don't criticise anyone who works outside the home and I know a lot of people don't have any choice but I just know that in my heart this is the right thing for me. Who'd have thought it!

Just posted this then realised it fitted in well here. I am only a newbie to OS but I know its for me and hope to learn lots from you lovely people.:T

EEEEww - My kids always laugh when I make something for some one else because I wear a natty polka dot shower cap :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
