Toilet training - boys

I personally wouldn't encourage him.
He doesn't sound like he's ready. One of the worst things you can do with toilet training is try and rush it. You'll be cleaning up wee from your furniture and carpets when you really don't need to.
Wait until he's ready and then try. if he's still not ready - put the nappies back on and try again in two months.
I waited with all of mine (one boy two girls) and all of them were potty trained within a day and 100% toilet trained within a week.
I did exactly the same and saved sooo much stress.
I had a friend who did nothing but boast about her dd being "potty trained at 2" it would have been more accurate to say "doesn't wear nappies but really should"0 -
Hi,
I have 4 boys and each of them different, but I would say do waht you are doing and be led by him. This time of year its cold! I always found better in the warmer months to leave them with just undies on in the house or in the garden they are quicker to pull down, relax go with him!!!0 -
Hi, my Ds is now 3 and a half and it has taken a good 6 months to get him dry both day and night (still not 100% but nearly)
I first tried when he was 2 and a half but he wasnt ready by far,i think he'sjust lazy, any how first steps was figure out how to make it more fun so we:
Went to buy him a few packs of big boy pants, his choice although i veto's the dora knickers, asda have a good section at the moment with lazytown...cars.... football ones.
Then we went to buy some fancy pull-ups with what ever design they had, they were used for the first few nights and longer trips out.
Then we went to buy his potty, toilet thingy and stool, again all his choice, this is all about him so if he chose it he might be more inclined to use it.
Then we stocked up on kandoo stuff and special wipes, toilet roll just for him.
Lastly we got some pingpong balls and drew faces on them (they wont flush down the loo and helps him aim)
We started with just pants in the house, made the potty readily available and left him to it trying not to make a fuss about wee wee's, after a few puddles he got the hang of it, he was more interested in trying to hit the pingpong balls tho than sitting on the potty. he also prefers the thing that goes over the toilet than the potty
After winning the inhouse battle we went outside, taking a potty training kid shopping can be a nightmare due to a severe lack of public toilets so if we are driving we take his potty or wee bottle and try to go before we get out of the car (best thing about boys is if your caught short a empty bottle and a secluded area is a life saver) we used pull up nappies for longer journeys. or tried to find a toilet every half hour in the early days, by the time he might say he needs a wee it may be too late to find a one.
Night-time, we just put a binbag over his matress, put a pull up on and asked him before bed if he needed a wee (he usually goes in the bath though then he goes straight off to bed) and popped him on the potty wehn i went to bed. After 3 nights he went in to pants, we had a few accidents since but its faring ok.
He was a bit long winded to potty train but each kid is different, trying to get him to poo in anything other than a pull up was the hardest part, but its a case of him knowing when he needs to go.0 -
With both of mine, I let them run about the house nappyless for a few weeks catching what they dropped in the potty :rotfl: Also bought them a potty chair so they could sit watching telly on it. They were both over the moon when they got up and surprise surprise they had done the business while watching teletubbies etc4 Stones and 0 pounds or 25.4kg lighter :j0

prob leave it til summer time
buy some of his favorite character pants (lots!)
we played flush the blue loo with our ds (put one of those blue bleach blocks in) and we used a reward chart our ds loved stickers and he got to pick a toy/ small treat when he'd got ? amount of stickers for using the loo / potty - remeber to make a big fuss when their successful.
Dont punish or remove stickers for accident just clean them up and dont make a fuss about it (laminated flooring is useful!) we did have a cream carpet before we had the kids! :rotfl:
boys take longer my dd did it in a few days and went through the nights ds had dry night pants til he was about 5! then just got a massive pile of bedding and pj's and some waterproof covers and got ready for a few nights of distrubed sleep/ changing beds at 3am to crack it.
I knew ds was ready when he emptied his box of dinosaurs onto the floor climbed into the box and pee'dBR as of 14/1/2009

I trained DS when he was 2yr 7mths - he'd been showing all of the 'signs' of being ready for AGES but refused point blank to even sit on a potty or toilet. Someone gave us the advice to try for 3 days and if they haven't got it leave it for a month before trying again, but he ended up getting it first time once we actually set about it in earnest.
What we did was make sure we were at home for the week, then had him running round with pants but no trousers on, and put him on the toilet at 'key points' in the day - when he got up, after meals or simply if he hadn't been for a few hours. We made him sit there for at least 5 minutes or until he'd done something then made a really big fuss of him when he did anything.
We also promised him a 'prize' if he was managed it - went through the Argos catalogue and let him pick it so he knew exactly what he was getting and kept reminding him of this when he wanted to get off the loo! By Day 2 he was asking to use the toilet and by Day 3 or 4 was going all day without accidents, even ventured into town with him!
He did get a bit lazy at nursery recently (getting distracted playing) but a sticker chart sorted that out. We're just tackling night time training - have given up waiting for dry nappies through the night - so up to my ears in wet bed linen and PJ bottoms!0 -

Oh God, yeah my Mum was terrible! She even started telling me we might have 'missed the window' and he could end up being incontinent for years and years to come! I have NO IDEA where she got the 'window' idea from...:eek:0
