Toilet training - boys

Our little chap is now 2 and 3 months and we are starting to think about toilet training in the near future.

He knows what a potty is, but unlike his playmates (same age) he seems reluctant to even sit on it. Daddy shows him how to wee, we have had friends (same age) sitting on the toilet to show him and he has a boy doll that wees.

Is there anything else I can be doing to try and encourage him? I have read the book 'toilet training for boys'.

I would love to hear your stories about how / when you toilet trained your boys.

give him time.. he is still young..

It does sound like your doing all the right things, just no pressure, come on he is a bloke after all.

He will do it when he is good and ready

  • He has plenty of time yet. My son was 2 and a half when we started potty training and he was fully dry, day and night, within 2 days. Don't rush and keep relaxed about it is the biggest tip I can give. I also read the Gina Ford Potty Training In a Week book which was useful.

Boys take notoriously longer than girls in my personal experience. Girls like to be independent, boys tend to be lazy :rotfl:

Keep it casual, let him think that the idea was his and he will be more likely to do it.

    Good luck x

ETA: Letting him think that the idea was his is something that should be used right through to manhood :D

My second child was a boy and i was relaxed about it ,but it was a huge mistake my son is 5 and a half and until very recently wet himself at school ,he is always wet at night but that runs in our family so i can cope with that.

I think don't push to hard but keep an eye on it and keep encouraging dont just let it happen,i think my son is in the minority but it has been a nightmare at school he knows what he's doing but i cant get through to him i wish i has started early now.
  • I wouldn't push it he is still young.

Boys tend to be trained nearer to 3. My son was two and three quarters and I trained him in a week.

Have a look at Gina Fords potty training in a week. I didn't do any of her child care routines, but the potty training was great for me. It has all the preparation and it really does work.

My son was easier to do than my daughter currently is and I think that is because she is younger than he was when I trained, but I have to have her trained for preschool, and they are taking her early.

If I had the option I would be waiting longer with her!!

I didn't toilet train any of my children I waited until they were ready and decided they didn't want to wear nappies any more..

They varied greatly in the age at which they reached this point.. DD1 was 18 months, DS3 was 3.5.. night time dryness is another matter entirely.. most it came with day time dryness other than DS3 who was 6.5 and DD3 who is 9 and STILL wearing a nappy for bed.

We just had the potty lying around.. it was a boat, a hat, a bed, a chair etc... then when they got to having their daily 'bottom airing' they would eventually go sit on it and when they were ready they'd use it properly.. at which point asking them not to keep their lunch in it became a problem.

Don't force the issue.. it just makes it take 10 times longer!

  • It doesn't sound like he's ready as others have said. You are doing all the right things by encouraging him, and letting him see others wee in the right place, but until he's ready there isn't much you can do. Does he let you know when he has weed or pooed in his nappy?

    Thank you all!!!

Your stories are helping me keep perspective. It sounds like I need him to lead the way to the potty.

I would love to hear more if anybody else has a view on this?
