Toilet training - boys

I personally wouldn't encourage him.
He doesn't sound like he's ready. One of the worst things you can do with toilet training is try and rush it. You'll be cleaning up wee from your furniture and carpets when you really don't need to.
Wait until he's reading and then try. if he's still not ready - put the nappoes back on and try again in two months.
I waited with all of mine (one boy two girls) and all of them were potty trained within a day and 100% toilet trained within a week.
Until he's reading??!!
Tee hee we know what you mean...I think!

PS. My little man was about 20 months when he used to be in the bath and say, 'Need a wee.' When I took him out I sat him on the toilet and he actually did a wee! I knew then he was ready so at 22 months I just went out and bought some fab Thomas 'knick-kinicks' and 'Big boy vests' and just told him that we weren't going to do our wees or poos in the nappy any more. I took him to the toilet every 20 mins or so and sat him on. I then made a huuuuuge fuss if he did a wee and read him a book or something while he was on there. He took to it like a duck to water and only ever had one accident (and that was my fault cos we were at a party and he told me he needed to go but I was too busy nattering to get him there on time!). We didn't bother with the potty at all-more because he'd always seen us use the toilet and I couldn't face another stage later of 'potty to toilet' training. Good luck with it!New Year, New Me!!!Weight loss mission 2012 has officially begun!!:jLoss so far: 3 stone 4lbs:j0 -

lol ready.
However did I manage to write that?! Note to self - engage brain."One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."0 -
My other half is 54 and still cant hit the toilet !!!:rotfl:
I used to put a ping pong ball in the toilet when training my son, it was a game to try and hit it0 -
My lad had his bladder emptied at 18 months using a catheter because he was undergoing medical tests.( Everything was fine) They told me his bladder was very full and he was well ready for daytime potty training. As it was the summer I just ditched his nappies and put on little pants. He hated the feeling of weeing his pants and within 3 days was using the toilet. We had a little step for him to stand on.
His older sister also was trained at 18 months (also in the summer ) I just bought loads of panties and she too hated wetting herself. We used to sit her on the potty every hour or so and read her stories or play with her until she did a wee or got bored.
With each of them we gave a big cheer and danced around with joy everytime they did the business.
When it came to nightime potty training we didn't give them a drink a couple of hours before bedtime and took the sleepy heads for a quick wee when we were going to bed. We only whispered so as not to wake them up too fully.
We were always made it positive and fun and never negative. It's great to be ALIVE!0 -
my ds never used the potty, didn't like it and wanted to go on the toilet instead, we put pants on under his nappy to begin with so he could feel more when he was wet and this seemed to help. he was just over 2 when we did this, i also think him being at nursery and seeing the other kids use the loo or potty helped.
think you have to remember that they're all different and theres no right or wrong time or age just when that individual child is ready!!!!0 -
My boys hated the potty, absolutely hated it
In fact, they only used it for a day, then they decided they preferred the toilet, and they both toilet trained really quickly - they were both almost 3. DS2 was out of night nappies shortly after wards and has never had an accident since.
What annoys me is relatives with their little comments 'oh, he/she is 2 now..that'll be the potty training starting now' or 'is he not trained yet?? All my children were trained at 18months!' etc. Drives me mad, I prefer to let kids wait until they are ready (within reason - after 3 they are pushing it)
DD is 2 and I started training her this week. She is getting there, better with the potty than the boys were anyway.

He thinks nappy changes are boring though (quite rightly so), especially at play times so will always try and keep it quiet so his play isn't interrupted!
Mind you DS3 made HUGE dramas about poos on the potty or the loo, so that's not entirely true. :rotfl:Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
My tips that worked for me:
1. Have potties around from about age 1.
2. Let DS see you and DH use the loo and tell him what you are doing.
3. Mention pee/poo etc and let him learn what they are!
4. Let him choose nice pants (we got Thomas for example!).
5. When you decide to go with it, start off with a couple of days at home, with no pants on if you can, and put him on potty every wee while....reinforcing that he is peeing. Also can let teddy go too, or a favourite toy.
6. Be prepared for mistakes and try to be understanding!
We started with DS at 2yr 3 months and made a few mistakes first couple of days, but then he got it fairly quickly! Has not really had any mistakes since, although a couple of peeing over edge of potty by mistake incidents!
He is also dry at night now too-2 yr 6 months.
All the best!

Do it in the summer would be my advice. He might want to water the flowers! Some prefer to go straight on to teh toilet to be like Mum and Dad, if so put a ping pong ball in the water for him to try and hit!0
