We had the annual service, next day heating wouldn't start. BG engineer said heating wouldn't start because thermostat tripped and reset. He also said that there was a break in the seal.
He has flagged it as use at own risk (carbon monoxide detector sitting exactly next to it) and booked an appt for us for bg to sell us things. He said that the model of our boiler stopped being made in 1984.
My question - would a boiler marked as use at own risk qualify as working for scrappage? Also, how easy is it to find someone other than BG to quote as I don't know exactly where to start. I like the thought of being able to deal with someone who I can chase and get things sorted out and I am not sure about independents.

if the seal was leaking then it should be class as ID ,AR means it could be a danger .i wouldnt worry to much about it .boiler trip (engineer proberly left stat turned up to high very common recall )
BG will do a good job but will cost more ..proberly about £1000 more ..dont sign up get 3 quotes and take it from there
Thank you so much for your reply.
I will have a browse in yellow pages and ask around. I don't mind paying slightly more for a good job though I don't want to be ripped off. I have been seriously considering BG because the men who have come out on various calls (we have had home care with them for over twenty years) have been fantastic. The office, however, couldn't find their head with both hands and a roadmap.Ankh Morpork Sunshine Sanctuary for Sick Dragons - don't let my flame go out!0 -

if i dint know anybody and say my mum wanted her boiler doing i would be more than happy for her to spend a bit more and have bg fit it ..
before signing with bg please come back and tell us what boiler they are going to fit ..(sometimes they do not fit the best boilers) remember the guy that comes is a sales man and not an engineer ..so he will tell you that if you buy today we will knock and other ££££ off the price ..(dont worry they will phone you back in a few days offering you even more off)i know trust me ..
Thank you - thank goodness for MSE. I am so clueless for this that I know I could easily be taken advantage of.
Also, the job will not be just a new boiler, but also a switch so that I can have hot water without putting the heating on and an overall house thermostat instead of the individual thingies on the radiators that don't work. Also I don't know if it is possible to have instant hot water and get rid of the immersion heater/hot water tank and airing cupboard.
I shall make a list of questions, make some careful notes and come back on here to make sure that it is alright. Thank you for your advice.Ankh Morpork Sunshine Sanctuary for Sick Dragons - don't let my flame go out!0 -

how big is your house / do you have any power showers or anything ..the reason i ask is you may need to keep your airing cuboard ..it my also be better to keep your airing cuboard ..i would get the bg guy round let him do a house survey and see what he says is best ..then get the plumbers around and see what they say ..i would take what bg say as been more likey to be correct ..
i dont have a combi/instant hot water in my house i like to have a tank of hot water and the back up of the immersion heater ...also if fitting a combi water pressure is important and flow rate ..X British Gas engineer and X BG sales adviser.

Thank you, you are giving me a lot of food for thought - it is very much appreciated.
The house is over four storeys and there are eight rooms plus bathroom. There is a cellar kitchen and the bathroom is two floors above, with the cold water tank on the floor above that. There are no power showers. Water pressure seems fine, but I don't know how it is measured. Lots and lots comes out of a cold tap really easily.
One reason for getting rid of the airing cupboard is that we are hoping that my father will move in and that will be his room, so a lack of airing cupboard will mean more space. However it does keep the room warm and my father feels the cold, so there is a silver lining.
I am really grateful I can come in here and get advice, I would be very much at the mercy of salesmen otherwise.
Also - I have no reason to doubt the integrity of BG salesmen, but their job is to sell.Ankh Morpork Sunshine Sanctuary for Sick Dragons - don't let my flame go out!0 -

Thank you.
I wasn't expecting it to be cheap, and I know lots of people say BG is expensive, and I have had some stupendous rows with the office...
but I know that the workmanship will be good and that if there is a problem I have a reasonable chance of (eventually) getting it sorted.

Why do you not go to the Gas Safe website put in your postcode and get some quotes from the people listed. Gas Safe are independent and you will get a mix of big and small companies. I personally would not use BG they are no better than any other company out there.
Captain Vimes would know a good installer!0
