Opion for British Gas Quotation for Boiler scrapage scheme

Hi there,

I have semi-detached 3 bedroon house. The British Gas have quoted for £3400 for everything using their own boiler called Britich/Scottish Gas 300+ High Efficiency Boiler. He suggested this boiler rather than Worcestor/Bosh 18Ri is because we may have an extension later on.

He also stating that BG have 15yrs guarantee, if we user their home cover, because after 5yrs the boiler manufactures stop making parts for old boilers.

Can you please give opion on whether this is reasonable and if it true that the new boiler do not last long as our current 13 yrs old Ideal Concord boiler and touch wood it has server us well without any trouble.

Many thanks.

As per usual an over inflated price from BG and mis-information.

To get any new boiler in production, manufacturers have to undertake to supply spares for a minimum of 10 years.

However, this does not stop BG taking spares availablity from their computers to try to get you to have a new boiler.

A good and recommended local installer will cost a lot less than this and the scrappage allowance will still be available if your boiler qualifies. If your boiler is only 13 years old, it will not qualify any way.

Most modern boilers should give at least 15 years of working life if serviced and looked after annually.

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
New boilers are complex machines that probably wont last as long as older ones.
I'd strongly advise you to get a couple of alternative quotes, as British gas are very expensive.
IMHO if the old boiler ain't broke then don't fix it, payback on your new system will take many years if ever.
A number of the main manufacturers have their own network of installers, so it might be worth getting in touch with them, or your local council may have a trusted trader scheme.
That gum you like is coming back in style.
  • Many thanks for the info. It good to know that the parts will be available for some time rather than 5yrs as said by BG.

I wouldn't panic yet the old concord still has another 13 years in it ;)

Perhaps the heating could be upgraded when the extension is built?

it is advised to change your boiler if over 15years old ..so your saying they should keep it until its 26years old ..

the 13 years of extra gas used would have proberly pay for a new boiler ..
