Made cupcakes this morning, with vanilla buttercream frosting for the first time. Unbelievably scrummy, was tempted to eat them all myself but thought I'd better take them into work so I couldn't eat them all!!

I've baked :-A batch of Twinks, Hun-gry cake, Flapjack using choc muesli, Cheese and marmite muffins, bread (in the BM) and some carrot and caraway dog biscuits. I've just bought Cakes from the River Cottage series and fancy baking a few more of the recipes but I've ran out of cake tins.

  • I've baked a loaf of carraway & fennel seed bread and some sausage rolls from Jamie's 30 min meals book for packed lunches.

I've been eyeing up that book, I have River Cottage Bread and it's gorgeous so I wondered if the Cakes one is as good. Is there anything out of the ordinary in it that would make it worth buying?

If you love the Bread book then I think you would love this book. I've got a few from the series but the only one I'd have recommended would have been the Bread one....until now. I love this book for a few reasons; I finally understand why I used to make rubbish cakes; a lot of the recipes give you alternative ideas, e.g the savoury muffin recipe gives you four alternative kinds using one dry base; some of the recipes are unusual, like the cardamon cake I'm trying tomorrow and; being a River Cottage book it gives you recipes for cakes/muffins that use seasonal fruit and veg.

When I looked through the book, I think that the cakes using the seasonal fruit and veg appealed to me most, mainly because I got an allotment last year and had an abundance of beetroot, courgettes etc and this book has a few recipes that incorporate these ingredients. I can't wait to try the rhubarb pudding cake in a couple of months time and I'm trying to invent a reason to make the yummiest looking chocolate cake I've ever seen. If I lost this book, I'm pretty sure I'd replace it.

There is a downside to my recommendation though. I now need to buy some different sized cake tins as I only own 2 on account of my previous failings at cake making :o.

ETA, After each recipe it also tells you how long it will keep for, although lasting and keeping are different things in this house

Thanks, it sounds lovely :) And it seems my local library have ordered it so I've reserved it (although unfortunately four other people have also ordered it before me!).

Re the cake tins, I think a lot of fuss is made about using the right size tin. If I don't have the tin size that a recipe asks for, it goes into whatever I do have that's the closest and I just use my judgment as to how long it'll take. And I've never had a failed cake yet :)
