The giving up/cutting down alcohol thread part VI

I'm dreading the weekend - I usually find it hard not to drink on a Fri/Sat or Sun - its like I think I've earned it or something.
OK - so I earn spending money on wine and drink it then feel paranoid and angry the next day - nice thing to earn eh?SO to drink for an hour (the length an average bottle of wine lasts me) to make me feel terrible for the whole next day mentally (not physically - I don't get hangovers) its really not worth it is it? I keep needing to focus on that bit.
I'm sorry you're dreading the weekend. Most people look forward to the weekends.
It sounds like drinking doesn't make you happy at all, and you regret it afterwards. That's a great reason not to drink.
I know for myself, I thought my drinking was a habit, and something I enjoyed. However, it was a regular habit, and one I couldn't break easily.
When the fun went out of drinking and I still continued to drink (regardless of the consequences) why didn't I stop the habit?
I now realise I was alcoholic - that's why I didn't stop drinking when it was costing me a lot of my happiness (amongst other things). I believe that habits can be broken with enough will power, however addictions like alcoholism cannot be broken with all the will in the world.
Having a cup of tea first thing in the morning is a habit (I have one virtually every single morning) - however I am sure if it was making me unhappy I could stop that habit and be ok about stopping.
Alcohol wasn't like that with me. It gave me nothing and took a lot from me. Yet I still returned to it. That is an addiction.
While I may not have been physically addicted (I didn't drink everyday or shake when not drinking) I was mentally addicted (why I kept going back to drinking)
I had to change myself so I don't get that desire to drink. It can be done. One day at a timeIts a habit I need to change - just not sure how to yet - ??????? It's hard to change a routine which is focussed on being at home. (Home is of course where I normally drink)
It's not easy, though many things worth having in life are not easy either.
If what you have tried doesn't work, try something else.
I tried for many years to control and moderate my drinking. And I tried to do it by myself (using will power) for years. That never worked.
I had to realise my drinking was more than a habit, and I couldn't stop by myself. No alcohol been in the new house yet - I'm trying to make it an AF house generally (I guess I can't stop other people)
You can stop other people. You can make it an AF house. If they get in a strop about it, then they sound like the people who aren't supporting you, so you probably don't want them around anyway. Put yourself first Fay - you are worth it!The lighter nights are helping though
Good. I drank Winter and Summer.........all seasons.
In summer I drank as the nights were longer and warmer, so more outside drinking. In the winter I drank as it was cosy indoors, etc.
I kidded myself that these things mattered to me.
I drank as I am alcoholicRamble central

Morning all,
Feel like crap today, sore throat
Planning an AF evening already, taken a job lot of Mr T's Finest Chicken Breton (??) out of the freezer, have no idea what they are like (in fact have no idea what it is!) but I picked them up for a quid each down from about 7 or 8 quid. I must not spend time in the kitchen tonight so will be shoving them in the oven and reading my book and texting Fay mostly
Must get ready to go out, OH and DS have gone up to a museum in London and I'm left with the smallest miserable one that hasn't stopped moaning since she woke up.DFW Nerd no. 496 - Proud to be dealing with my debts!!0 -
So there I was, happily sat on the loo, when a bloke on a ladder turned up outside the window and started cleaning my guttering  thank the lord I have opaque windows and he didn't know I was there, but even though he was unaware I was sat about 3 feet away from him still made it all feel very wrong :eek:DFW Nerd no. 496 - Proud to be dealing with my debts!!0

Dougal: Morning Florence......tea? toast?
Florence: Dougal, Dougal no - there's no time - something terrible has happenned - there's no time for toast......!!!!!
Dougal: No time for toast - NOTHING is that serious

Very quiet on here this afternoon??
Beautiful sunny day here today - been out shopping (raided all the various saving pots around the house:rotfl::rotfl:) and bought bread which I have secretly hidden in the freezer. I bought a really cheap loaf for the cupboard - if greedypants wants to scoff the lot he can!:D

((Hugs)) to Maman and Miss Piggy.
Jo  :rotfl:I'd have crawled along below the level of the window ledge in case the man on the ladder saw my outline and knew what I'd been doing!
Marru good luck with the job application. Does your OH know you might be closer to him (geographically I mean, I'm sure the two of you are very close)?
Graeme thank you, your wise words have given me a lot to think about recently.
