I can't believe what it going on at the moment, they are making a huge push to 'drink sensibily' etc and on the other hand taking the resources away from people that need help. My only option now is AA as the local drug and alcohol service weekly meetings don't happen anymore either (which I found a great support). So it's AA or nothing (and this is out of the mouth of a substance misuse keyworker at the councils drug and alcohol service!).

Great post Jo - it seems you only have one option available to you.
You have to really want it for AA to work - it is not enough just to need it. You must want it too.
Many people lose things before they want it enough - marriages, kids, jobs, health, etc

Hey GC - how's life going with you at the moment?

    I always forget to ask......

All ok in the GC house thanks. Today I can get through without drinking, and that for me is a good day.

  • Morning!

I have to ask – what does FAFF mean? I gather there is alcohol free in there somewhere? It’s really tickled me!

Jo1972 I’m sorry to hear you didn’t have the best of response with your GP. I am quite shocked at his response to be honest. It maybe of interest to visit a GP with Special Interest in alcohol. You should be able to find out where they are based by phoning your local Primary Care Trust, or speaking to the Substance Misuse Team. I cannot believe for London of all places to have such little to offer from the NHS. All districts operate on different budgets etc, so I only know what we have in my area. There definitely should be some free groups other than AA available with Drugs Workers (who deal with both drink as well). Jo1972 have you tried looking on the net? A lot of these support groups and counsellors are set up independently so cannot afford a lot of advertisement, but most have websites. As for your drinking, like I mentioned every case is individual and you have to do what works best for you. I really do hope you can find some support. Perhaps even the Samaritans might have contact numbers for free services in your area?

Sorry to hear about the problems you are having with your fatty liver. It can be uncomfortable when it swells. Do you take any supplements? I would recommend that you buy some vitamin B12, vitamin C and definitely Milk Thistle, supermarkets brands are as good as any. Sadly there is no medical cure to treat a fatty liver. It has to be done yourself, this which you probably know. Losing any excess weight, cutting down on starchy carbs, sugars, processed foods basically anything fatty and increasing fruit, veg and water intake.. and of course having as many AF days as you can! Why not look online for a liver detox diet, they can be good. Best of luck huni xx

Also for the lady who asked about being worried about having her children taken from her if she visits her GP, it is not in anyones interest to take away children from their parents, and is a very last resort. That is for the unfortunate children who suffer neglect and worse.

The prodigal daughter returns to say hello to everyone
Not a good week - only FAFFed yesterday...

Married friend's marriage is on last legs and he is leaning on me for help, all I can do is reiterate why I left my marriage (same feelings as his wife i.e. no longer attracted to husband, although I did not have an affair) and that he learns to live with it or separates from her and looks for what he needs elsewhere, but he is clinging on out of love for her and their boys and she is clinging on too, I think because she can't finance their lifestyle herself having lived off his income for years. Very sad.

I had a very hot potential new boyfriend who turns out to have a fiancee in Cape Town...he says he will finish with her etc and I have told him that I am not interested unless and until he does but he is not deterred, still flirting away. I must confess that my moral compass is straightened by the fact that said fiancee is my best girlfriend's friend's sister i.e. too close to home and I am not risking losing another friendship because of my need for affection and sexual gratification. Still can't help feeling "here we go again.." I won't be AF today as I am meeting my friend later for a chat and it will involve wine.

Anyway I'm off back to sleep for a bit then will catch up on all your news.

    xx

Okay I didn't give in last night so thats 4 AFD for me this week. In a bit of a quandry about what to do now it's weekend. We usually go to our local pub after work and have a few and then go there on Saturday as well and meet our friends. Last week I didn't do the Friday thing as I'd felt cr*p the weekend before and knew I was overdoing it. However did do Saturday and made up for it. Not going to go out tonight but might have some wine at home. If I can just have half of the bottle and save the other half for another night then that will be an achievement.

I didn't really drink much when I was younger and need to get back into the habit of being able to go out and not drink sometimes. Did it for months about two years ago when I was on the Atkins diet and booze was forbidden. Maybe my desire to be thin is stronger than my desire to drink. :)
