from previous experience make sure any sensors you fit are oem, aftermarket are often iffy.0

Seconded for getting onto mg-rover.org
IMHO rovers aren't much worse for HGF than any other car its just the "Oh, its a rover, must be HGF" resulting in multiple false dignoses.
I had suspected HGF on my 114 and upon cracking the engine open found that the HG was fine however the problem was that the monkey who had done it "as as precaution" had bodged the job good and proper. Bolts missing and allsorts :mad:Proud of who, and what, I am. :female::male::cool:0 -

What I'm saying is that it is a self fulfilling prophecy. Once something gets a reputation for something negative 9/10 something goes wrong thats what it is - even if its not!
In the K series engine there are a number of scenarios which can create HGF like symptoms but aren't (water leak at inlet manifold for example) and a lot of those problems are caused by lack of maintainance more than anything.
I also firmly believe that in the case of Rover its the old classic of the british public these days (Oh, it was made here!!?? It MUST be shonky!)
Although I drive a Rover (and a fun little car it is too) I hold no candle for them. It just really irritates me when people take a guilty by association stance - just like them mondeos, they all have DMF failure don't they.....Proud of who, and what, I am. :female::male::cool:0 -

im sorry catflea the amount of failed rover head gaskets that come on here, either asking for help or folk pitching in with "oh yes my head gasket went on my 214 aswell at 25,000 miles" or similar comments quite rightly give the k series and rover the reputation they deserves.
blame it on folk not checking thier coolant often enough or not changing it often enough or what ever but there has been no other car on here that stands out as much as the rovers did with HGF. next closest would be the fiat punto in my opinion.
i agree with your comment about the mondeos DMF, im sure most with DMF will fail sooner rather than later,it seems to be a common problem on a lot of moden diesels....work permit granted!0 -
Any mechanic can tell you just how bad the K series are/were for their headgaskets. Its not a "myth". The engine had a design flaw that lead to the headgaskets failing through no fault of the driver. For you to say that you don't think the K series is much worse than any other car in terms of headgasket failure, well I think that's kind of like holocaust denial really... very stupid... but maybe not quite as bad...0

Ok, maybe badly worded!
They aren't as bad as made out though and with the self fulfilling prophecy that I mentioned above, people assume its HGF when quite often its not. Prime example - one friend of mine had a S reg 200 (1.1!) and said to me "its not running right, theres mayo in the oil filler - the head gasket must have gone" There was a bunged up breather pipe somewhere (can't remember exactly where though) pulled it off, cleaned it up and the car ran beautifully again - the mayo build up was where he was only driving it 1/2 a mile to work and back  never got up to temp.
I stand by my opinion that they aren't as bad as most people think.Proud of who, and what, I am. :female::male::cool:0 -
I just have to say with all this Rover bashing going on that they are my favourite cars!
(Ducks from rotten fruit thrown this way!!!
)
My mum bought a 5(ish) year old Rover Maestro in 1993. It never failed an MOT but had to be scapped because some yobbos put sugar in the engine and it would have cost more than the car was worth to repair.
My OH currently has a 2002 Rover 75 and loves it...:D
each to their own I guess. :beer:0 -
Thanks for all the replies but I am not here to ask if MGRover are good cars, Of course they are. I don't need anybody opinions. I love rover (though I am not English) shall stick to rovers till last one in UK. A bit OTT!
I know but thats how I feel.
I used to drive ambassador(google that!) Loved it for its built quality, was official cars for our prez and PMs and all others in GOvt. Machinary till new sexy bums flashed..........(yeah, I love my India and My rover!!!!)Was this post useful to you? Feel free to click the thanks button--¬ :beer:0
