best way to avoid spending money on unnecessary parts is to plug in a scanner and look at the live values, fuel trim, coolant temp etc. other than that you have given us almost no symptoms, history, what you`ve tested or any other information so far useful to diagnosing the fault so you wont get much help, all you will get is people saying it`s to be expected with rovers (IMO they are troublesome, but not much worse than other european cars. I`d have one over a french motor any day of the week but thats my preferance) they are knowledgable over on mg-rover.org, but if you post the same level of detail as you have on here they won`t be able to help you much either. Dont mention head gaskets on there, they get VERY touchy about it. I just mentioned that all 3 of my k series engines suffered it and thats why i went to a honda engined 216GTI one and it created a shitstorm of folk accusing me of trolling.0

so are you saying there is a strong smell of unburnt petrol after you turn the ignition on?
if so then you could well have a leak, when you turn the ignition on the fuel pump comes on pressurising the fuel lines which can cause a leak, it could be an inline fuel filter or split hose.
simple way is to turn on ignition and have a look under car for any leaks....work permit granted!0 -
Two things to check..
a)Engine thinks its cold due to faulty temp sensor so the air throttle bypass is remaining open to provide enrichment and not stepping down.
b) The air throttle assembly....is it the black plastic one? These have a tendancy to warp such that air leaks past it when foot off throttle. Usual symptom is tickover is irregular and tends to rev up then bob up and down. The newer ones are alloy.
c)There might be air leaks on the engine/intake manifold assemblies
A is no 1 suspect to check first.Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0 -
I had a car that split the fuel return to the tank, leaking petrol down the back wheel, but only when it was running.0

K series suffered HGFs apparantly only after the wet liners were changed to damp liners by MGR. I don't know if my car suffered one prior to my ownership. Re: petrol leak I tried putting a card board underneath to check in the morning> no evidence. The smell of petrol is not from the engine bay or interiors but from exhaust. Never noticed smell before, coupled with poor economy......... I fear its CTS and I am afraid, if its lambda palying up, must not have fubarred the CAT( big money involved then).
Thanks for all the responses.
Car's getting hooked to t4 at stealers tomorrow @£65 and then £40/hour.

No need to be offended, I based my comments on hard facts.
I still to this day find it amazing that a high quality car maker like Honda ever got mixed up with a deadbeat outfit like Rover.0 -
Try removing the front and rear Rover badges. Your car may then forget that its a peice of !!!! and start driving normally0

I had a K series engined car once. It had various issues with air leaks which kept upsetting the injection system. One of the major flaws apparently is that the K series is clamped together with long bolts rather than individually bolted together as sub assemblies. A,lso had issues with the air throttle body (swapped for an alloy one). Never did get to the bottom of the air leaks issue though.Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Got the results:- £65 for test book
1. Coolant Temp Sensor Circuit = FAIL = ~£11
2. Inlet Air Temp. Sensor Circuit = FAIL = ~32
Are the dealer prices OK or should I seek another garage? Was this post useful to you? Feel free to click the thanks button--¬ :beer:0 -

Total = £43. You're hardly going to save a fortune by looking elsewhere. Get it fixed.0
