To be honest numpty, it probably is the only real solution to this issue (although I don't think it's a solution at all). There are many other smilies which can cause problems still available on MSE and then more still which can be downloaded by firefox users or ones imported from other sites. But then, you'd also need to turn off the ability to post images because it's still possible to just copy and paste from elsewhere.

 :wall:
I think your missing the point Martin, Sorry
Oh, and i can not be sure, but dont think it used either of those smilies
The problem though is that the use of smillies can be a more prolonged and insidious form of abuse than the type of poster that keeps coming back after a ban, although we have had more than our fair share of that this past week. Not taking away from the fact that you have felt targeted by someone or indeed trying to draw an attack away from others but the fact that they have been banned on four occasions does show that reporting the user has worked and in lots of ways is easier to deal with.
My opinion only, I'm not speaking for Martin or the Team but you can be sure this has not been done lightly or over something that has just been happening lately.0 -
Are people really getting wound up over 'smilies'? If it lightens the work load and keeps the servers running smoothly, what's the problem?
I bet the people of Haiti would be laughing if all the problems they encountered was the case of the missing smilies.
His site, his rules. We are merely guests in the virtual towers of MSE!0 -

No, reporting it did not work, it made it worse.............Thats it, i am done, Blind-as-a-Bat has left the forum, for good this time, there is no way I can recover this account, as the password was random, and not recorded, and the email used no longer exits, nor can be recovered to recover the account, goodbye all ………….0 -
I belong to a forum on the Multiply software, and only the initial poster in a thread can insert smileys, and even then there is not much of a choice. It's surprising how soon you adapt to not bothering with them at all.
I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe

I'm all for reducing antagonism on the boards, but............
........ sorry Martin, all you have succeeded in doing is making MSE look very very foolish.
You forgot the "again" word.
But no, I think we are all looking at this in the wrong light. After all this just shows that the Team does actually live in the real world, and not in some dimly lit IT world of poor interpersonal-relationships and worse intra-personal hygiene and they can come up with good, wholesome, clean-living, regular bowel-movement ideas which can make a difference to the poor, oppressed digitally-divided.
After all the absence of smilies isn't actually preventing anyone from being sarcastic, and people who know, will know - not only the meaning, but the target.
