Er....what's so bad about CRT TVs?

My 10 yr old 28" wide-screen Philips crt has 100 hz refresh rate so even that is covered. It is the missus who wants a bigger screen not me (have warned her that most everyday progs are still in SD and might look worse).
Now, I would replace it but have so far not found an even nearly affordable lcd of say 40" with half reasonable sound quality. So it means having add on extra cables & boxes all over the place just to bring the sound anywhere near that of the old crt set that has a woofer concealed within it's cabinet (it even has wireless speakers for back of room that give fine old Dolby surround).
The one and only attraction for me is, lcds are much easier to move around for room cleaning etc. By and large the manfrs are conning a willing public with the current generation lcd sets, I hope some good affordable designs arrive soon with the sound problem fixed (not expecting sub-bass but a good full, loud & clear sound is needed out of the box IMO). Also even the latest lcds seem to use twice the energy of our old crt (and will make the living room rather warm in summer if left on a lot).0 -
My 79yo dad has a 42'' Panasonic plasma. He needs subtitles and it's great for that. He says it's the best thing he's bought.
:D
Great, my post was intended as sarcasm, but some bright spark has removed the rolling eyes smilie.:)
Not sure why some people seem to be surprised that a 70+ individual should have the latest items.
Good for them, I say.;)0 -
My last CRT gave up at 20 years old. Our current CRT is fine, although the OH is desperate for a flat screen to whack up on the wall. I'm more concerned about the holes in my wallpaper!Ahhhh.... lemony fresh victory is mineee!!!0

Doesn't it hurt your neck if you're watching the screen if it's on the wall? If I were to put my TV over the mantlepiece, it's not in a good viewing position from anywhere in my livingroom. I've always wondered about it when people have their TV's wall-mounted.0 -

Same here, I agree.
I think it is the old " style over sense " syndrome yet again.:)0 -

Not sure why I get the sarcasm thrown at me. I'm sure every 15 year old in the country would laugh his butt off if he saw his mum bringing home a CRT TV, but most 70+ year olds I know are not bothered about technology. In the case of my dad, I'm not sure he's ever been on the internet - by himself at least. And AFAIK he doesn't have a mobile phone either. In contrast, my 12 year old son is now on his 4th (I think) mobile phone. Actually, a touch screen phone was his only wish for christmas.
It was your statement of " Even my 73 year old dad has now got a LCD TV. " that had me so amazed, as if there was rule about a 73 year old person having a new LCD TV.0 -
