Er....what's so bad about CRT TVs?

I'm just wondering...
I know they don't have quite the same picture quality as a LCD TV, but for us MSE'rs who can't afford to spend £500+ on a 42" LCD and wants to upgrade my 32" CRT, what's the options? I mean, I can probably pick up a 40-42" CRT for under £100.
"Yeah, but CRT take up a lot of space".
Honestly, what's the difference width wise between a LCD and a CRT? 40 cm. Unless you live in a box room that is hardly worth worrying about, and the fact that LCDs "are easy on the eye" isn't really worth £400 for me.
I know the are old technology but so is eg. a single core CPU PC but I wouldn't hesitate recommending it to someone who just wants to write in Word and surf the web.
Blu ray....nah, not bothered.
1080p.....honestly, when £10k lands in my hand and all my debt is paid off, I might start considering that, not before.
So, am I missing something here or is CRT the best option for a poor guy or should I somehow save up until I eventually have £500?

i'm with you...CRT although bulky, do the job
i picked up one of ebay for £4 and it's great...
i dont want a massive telly for my small house....looks ridiculous...:p0 -
I really don't get the point of this thread.
If a CRT is alright for you and significantly cheaper, and you don't think the refresh rate [STRIKE]hertz[/STRIKE] hurts your eyes then go for it, it doesn't really matter what anyone else thinks.
That means that the only point of this thread is to start a debate as to whether or not CRTs actually damage your eyes. I remember some of that scaremongering as a kid in the 90s, was any of it actually true? One of my Beano comics even had an advertisement (presented in comic form) telling you how it was that regular CRTs make your eyes go square and flat CRTs didn't. Wondering why ASA didn't have a field day with that one.0 -
Your CRT will be fine until your area goes digital, then you will need to get a Freeview box or upgrade to a HD Ready digital TV anyway. In the meantime, if it works for you, fine.No free lunch, and no free laptop0

I've got a CRT and it's like a tank
However, it has freeview built in and cost me 1250 5 years ago! I will replace it fairly soon.
I would prefer a LCD as i have a 32" lcd wall mounted in my bedroom and it's the mutz nutz!0 -

Hi LCD and Plasma's have taken over from CRT TV'S because they can be produced in larger sizes at reasonable prices. The largest CRT TV sold in this country were 36" . Sony produced at 40" CRT but it wasn't sold in this country.0 -

I wonder if the OP meant 'easy on the eye' in a more figurative sense? He/she does ask a legitimate question, to which the answer is that there is nothing wrong with CRT televisions: they are more bulky, but the quality of the pictures on some receivers (my old Sony flatscreen for example) is still fantastic.
If you hang on a year or two you won't need to fork out £500 for a decent LCD!!RIP independent MSE.

I've got a CRT TV and would dispute that LCDs have a better picture at standard definition0

I would say that IMHO a CRT TV has a better/smoother picture than an LCD.
I would have stayed with CRT but ours broke and there was pretty much nowhere to buy CRT by that point. We were under John Lewis warranty but they couldn't get the parts so there was really no point buying another CRT
We have grown accustomed to the LCD picture but I would say buying a decent make like Sony is definately a good idea, we had a few shoddy cheapos before settling on a Sony.0 -
Thanks everyone.
DrScotsman: I wasn't aware that CRT could damage your eyes. I have 2 LCD monitors (and they were £30 (17") each 2nd hand before anyone asks why I could afford 2 24" monitors, but not a large LCD TV) for my PC and they don't seem to be better for the eyes if watching them over a longer period of time.
Macman: Yeah, I suppose that's the best reason for getting a LCD TV.
Keith1950: Really? I could swear I've seen some 42" CRT's somewhere.
Will-in-estoril: Yes, I did mean "they don't look as pretty as LCD's" as opposed to "they hurt the eyes".
Perhaps I should just wait a year or two and then if LCD's haven't fallen much in price, maybe get a 2nd hand one.0 -
