I run a Maintenance Company and it would be my entire fault if I hadn't checked somebodies calculations and based a price on it. I would be out of pocket especially if I gave a quote as opposed to an estimate. its his fault and he will just have to swallow it.

If you feel bad and he has done a good job, perhaps split the difference?

Maybe, he felt bad asking for extra knowing that you are pregnant?

    Thanks for everyone comments.

If my 72 years old mother was telling me the same story I'd probably be saying to her "he saw you coming!!!"

OH thinks we should drop the money round to him - with a little note saying that we are disappointed as we were under the impression it was a definite quote & although we would have been more than happy to recommend him,we don't feel we could do that now !!! (me & OH may have to agree to disagree on this one.lol)

Problem as I see it is that he took your husband's word for the square metres to be tiled. You were almost 12% out with your "approx" so all he's asking for is to be paid for the extra work. It all depends on whether you think that it's fair to pay someone on the basis of your poor estimate of the work involved. You've probably taught him a lesson for the future not to accept someone else's figures in respect of what was after all a very simple calculation and one which he obviously thought your husband was capable of doing reasonably accurately.

I think being conned is a bit over the top, at the end of the day you know what's happened, he estimated labour costs and material costs before the job, the material costs came to more and he's just asked you to pay rather than have to bear the cost out of his labour charge, that's all. He's entitled to ask. No conning here.

Tiler should have come and looked at the area to be tiled and then he would have got his original price correct. His mistake, thats tough - don't pay him anymore.

If you are going to pay it then at least text this man back and tell him to pop around to pick the money up, dont go delivering it. If he is ballsy enough to come to the door then give him the money and take comfort in the fact he wont be getting any work from your recommendation in future.

If he quoted on the basis of your estimate of 17 sq m and did 19, then he's entitled to ask for the extra-though why he couldn't check again and measure up properly at the start is beyond me. And texting you is a funny way of asking, considering he knew from Wednesday.
But £40 is spot on for an extra 2sq m based on the original price, so I don't think he's ripping you off-just timid. If he did a good job and you'd hire him again, then pay him.
Strikes me that he just took this on as a quick cash job and cut corners by not coming down and measuring up first before quoting you.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
