I'm I being conned by tradesman ?

Hi,was just wondering if any of you"Trades people"will give me thier opinion...........

Story............

Needed the bathroom tiling & wanted to replace the sink.

Asked a local tiler to give us a quote for the "Complete Job" He didn't measure up & Took OH calculations of "approx" 17sqm - all he asked "is it a cash job?"

Anyway he said he could do the job for £350 & started Tuesday.

On Wednesday he realised that we were approx 2sqm short of tiles, which we duly went and purchased - he made no mention of any extra cost .

Anyway he came to finish off this morning (we are quite satisfied with the work) and I paid him the £350,as agreed & he left about 11am - end of story.

OH gets a Text from him about 1/2 hour ago (some 4hrs after finishing the job) Telling us that he wanted another £40 !!! (Supposedly because of the other 2sqm of tiles)

Is this reasonable & should we just pay up or do you think he should have said something 2 days ago & is just trying it on ?

Any opinions appriciated

Totally UNREASONABLE £350 was a Quote not an ESTIMATE. Also, he's obviously trying it on as he texted you not called (Coward) get your other half too CALL him and tell him it was Quote not Estimate.
People like him are the people who give tradesmen bad names.... 4 hours ago??? he's in the pub with his mates having a laugh
  • And tell him if you did pay him cash that if insists on persuing for the extra £40 you will insist on telling HMRC about his cash transactions!

Suggest he takes a long walk off a short pier....unless you are likey to ask him to do anymore work for you.

  • Apart from anything else, if he has accepted payment then the contract is completed.

Some years ago we had a bricklayer in. He significantly underestimated the cost of materials but only invoiced us for what he had quoted.

We knew what it should have been and sent him a cheque splitting the difference - but he never asked for any extra.

Personally, I would just ignore the text. If he can't be arsed to phone me, I wouldn't be arsed to reply.

If he subsequently phones to ask for the cash, tell him to get stuffed. He quoted £350, not £350 plus a bit extra.

    Thanks for that Folks !!

I was starting to feel a bit guilty - the problem is when somebody is in your home for a few days you start to build up a relationship with them & it makes it so much harder to say no !!!

Tiler knows I'm having a baby on Tuesday,so probably thinks that we'll pay up 'cos we don't want the hassle.

Me & OH are "nice people" & hate any sort of confrontation !!!

    Thanks again
