growing herbs?

Basil is the most delicate in my experience. Can die if you look at it funny :rotfl: joking aside tho, keep it at a constant temp if you can, a sunny spot out of the wind. Don't water on top of the leaves they will rot or burn if the sun is out. You should water in the morning before the sun gets on it ideally at the base as long as it drains away so the stem doesn't sit in water. I treat it as an annual, as you can tell it has not been the easiest for me...good luck and enjoy! :TTW0906Blue

Also on the basil, as it starts to get taller, pinch out the tops. This will make it grow bushier rather than getting really leggy. When it starts to get flowers, pinch these off too, to stop it going to seed. This way it will go on and on.
I bring mine into the house in winter (greenhouse is unheated) and its been going for a couple of years now.

I was really nasty to my coriander plant once and gave it a most severe hair cut. It kept growing for ages!!0

Slugs and snail LOVE basil too.....you might want to think about that before you choose where to plant it - I usually keep mine in pots in the greenhouse and off the floor too....Sometimes I put down a little jar lid with a sprinkle of slug pellets to tempt the little blighters away!

Dont let your cat near herb seedlings. ours has just polished off my basil (i grew from seeds it had just had its propogator lid off) and im not best pleased.
I did try growing them from seeds, but i think i might give up and buy the plants from the supermarket and grow them in the garden, that way they wont get eaten.
Sorry a bit off subject!0 -
keep your eyes peeled in garden centres as they do some really good value for money herb packs. I bought on for £2.99 and it had 15 plants including basil, flat leaved parsley which is difficult to germinate, and chives. I potted most in individual pots which are in the greenhouse maturing, the rest I have potted in a larger pot and given to a friend as a house warming pressie. With most herbs you can cut them and they keep growing but if you are too brutal, they won't survive.0

My coriander did very well last year, as did my marjoram, which died down and has turned into a veritable bush already this year. My basil did badly outside but I have some in the house and it is doing well. Rosemary is easy to keep and I understand that bay trees are a winner. I think I'm going to get one of those too.
I'm a novice too. Last year was my first attempt.May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0 -
