I wouldnt describe myself as a medium but I too get flashes of intuition (especially when doing reiki or the tarot cards and at these times i am invariably right! if i try to do it - its pure rubbish).

I'm curious Tandraig - when you're reading cards are you not 'reading' a series of pictures - so what intuition do you need? As intuition is another way of saying 'guess' - (Not meant as a criticism at all - as I say - curious)

not taking it as criticism, I never mind people being curious, am very nosy myself!
ok - Tarot cards do have a particular meaning for a particular card - but, when you lay the cards out if you just read out the meaning for each card - you would have a very peculiar reading with some cards seeming to contradict each other. to see what i mean try going to an online site such as llewellyns' and get a free tarot reading. the cards are chosen at random and the meanings are computer generated!
when i do a reading i look at how many major or minor cards there are then i usually look for anomolies which will tell me if the cards are going to make sense - sometimes it doesnt so i usually just say, things are uncertain right now but i would be happy to try again in a week or so.
then i go through each card in my head (knowing the meanings) and relating each card to its position (position in layout can affect the meanings) and how the cards relate to each other.
only then can i start talking. and yes i do sometimes ask if something makes sense even if it sounds nuts to me! it may have meaning to the person.
this is usually when intuition kicks in - I am concentrating hard now and sometimes i will 'see' something like for a few seconds which may have nothing to do with what the cards are saying - but each time its happened i have been blown away by how accurate it is.
to illustrate - I was doing a reading for a person and he wanted business advice - but i 'saw' what looked like a photo of a younger version of him in a 'foriegn' army uniform. then i saw him playing cards, getting annoyed and storming out of what looked like a wooden building. I asked my client about this and he was gobsmaked. his younger brother was in the (turkish) army and had just invaded Iraq and they hadnt heard from him in three weeks and the family were dead worried. he told them what i had said about playing cards and they kept notes. he phoned the next week and they asked him about what he had done on this night at that time - easy - the same thing he did every night - played cards - and yes he had got furious as he thought someone was cheating!
sorry this took so long - but you see - you DID ask!!! hope i have cleared that up!

The meanings of the tarot cards is the easy part, the 'reading' comes in to play when you put them altogether and form the real picture. As there could be many different interpretations of the same cards, you use your 'intuition' to find the right one for your particular client.

As for medium etc not being regulated, I believe it was in 2008 that all readers were to make sure they had a disclaimer that each client was to have read, before conducting a reading, stating that the reading was for entertainment purposes only. Any reader that failts to do so, leaves themselves open to being sued, if the client has any sort of issue as a consequence of the reading. The law actually protected the reader as much as the client. Even so, I still see sellers on ebay, whom dont follow this practise. I dont believe readings need to be regulated any further than that myself.

A few posters mentioned that Mediums are not meant to charge for thier services, which in a way is true, as its a gift from god, and its meant to be used to help others.
But some are seeing it as a big money spinner by charging silly amounts of money.

If a genuine medium/clairvoyant said, 'if you want to make a donation, however small, it will be appreciated', then you dont mind bunging them a few quid, but when they charge anything between £30-£50 for approx 45-60 mins, thats taking the you know what.

However, being twofaced here lol, I must say I am very impressed with 'Sally Morgan' the latest 'Medium idol' she's on TV quite a bit now, and she is spot on, but she charges a hefty whack as well.:(

you read the cards too mumslave? most people think its a matter of memorising the meanings.
I hate those disclaimers - i have to use them for reiki too - but worded differently and always feel that they are telling the client my reiki is rubbish but you wont be able to sue me! when reiki is marvellous and my clients dont want to sue - they want to take me home with them!

I havent addressed the issue of payment.
I dont charge for Tarot readings as they are for family friends friends of friends and people who just hear about me. its not a business thing its a hobby and i enjoy it.
I do charge however for reiki - primarily because i had to pay (quite a lot of money) for the training, because reiki practitioners are required by the teachings of the founder to charge, and because its not a hobby, even though i only do it informally now. and i do not charge a lot - depends on peoples circumstances but i think it would average at about ten pounds (and it takes about 45 minutes and you may well get a free reading thrown in).
I think its ok for mediums to charge for their time - but not silly money - about £10 to £25 to me is ok - but above that i would be wondering just what i was paying for...........their mercedes or next cruise? and if a medium were to try to hold me to ransom by saying give me more money and i will tell you something - would be outta there faster than a greyhound out of a trap!

I have read the cards since I was 8 years old and my grandmother gave me my first tarot deck (the old style mythic tarot, I have adored greek mythology ever since). When I was 19 I began to read them professionally, as in become self employed as a tarot reader with my own business. I am currently on maternity leave but would normally be doing around 10-15 readings a week. I have different views than most other tarot readers though, I dont believe its a gift, I dont believe readers need to be psychic, I certainly am not, if i saw a ghost or spirit, I suspect I would probably wet myself. It's something that could be learned by absolutely anyone, whom is willing to apply themselves and go beyond the inital meanings, in my opinion.

I didnt have an issue with the disclaimer, though I know it caused quite an outcry in the 'psychic circles'. The way I see it, it was a good compromise, protecting both the reader and the client.

    wow - 8 years old!
can i ask? can you do a reading for yourself? I cant - i just cannot read them when doing a layout for myself - even my mind goes blank and i cant remember the meanings never mind 'see' anything in them!

I have bought quite a few decks - and then either sold them or given them away! the only deck i can use is the celtic dragon deck (my second purchase) i saw them online and fell in love and had to have them.
I love dragons and mythology and i loved the artwork in the deck. hate scary decks! I know the deck you name and its beautiful but doesnt draw me to it.
btw - my username tandraig means firedragon in welsh (though its not spelt right).

as for the fee, I cant speak for anything but tarot reading, however I look at it this way...

When you have spent many years learning something, it is not unfair to charge a FAIR fee for providing a service. Whether people agree or disagree with the service you provide is another matter. A large tarot reading, say the celtic cross or the wheel of the year, can take a good few hours to seriously read. Charging say £5.00 for say a 3 hour reading, is hardly unfair. Its less than the minimum wage. Charging £40 for say 20 minutes, now thats another matter, not something I personally approve of.

Then there is how the fee is charged. Some readers expect payment upfront. I dont have a problem with that, as long as they are willing to refund should the client be very unhappy. Some only ask after the reading, the best way in my opinion.

My friend, whom I have been teaching the tarot, recently went to see a self professed psychic tarot reader before christmas. This reader managed to do 3 readings in 40 minutes, including the celtic cross and the wheel of the year, both as you know, are not 40 minute readings....she also told my friend her husband would be in a car accident, and that they would conceive a baby this month (kinda hard as its impossible for them without IVF). My friend was so disappointed....but you know she still paid up. I was outstanded that the reader could take the money, especially after my friend said she was unhappy with the reading. But take it she did. Its no wonder there is a bad reputation out there.

I have a few decks, i recently gave away my first deck to my friend, she works very well with them. I have the gilded tarot deck which is just beautiful and the forest tarot deck, painted in the new forest, the one I read for clients with and my online site is based on.

I can read for myself, I think you have to try to detach yourself and not allow yourself to become convinced you are reading just what you want to read. Doubting yourself because you are reading for yourself is usually the problem.
