I know what you mean - I have to detach when reading for people i know well, cant do it for myself though - but then ive only been reading for about ten years and definately not professionally like you. must practice more in that case! and yes - i do tend to think if the cards show good things that thats what i wanted to see.

I've never been able to read anything for myself - and wouldnt care to try for anyone else either. I just have to content myself with the fact that I seem to get "warned" if there's anything major I need to be aware of and can "read" people often (what they are like generally as a person and the general gist of what they are thinking about me) - only wish I'd been able to do THAT much sooner.....

When you read for yourself, try to write down everything you perceive from the cards, even the parts you are certain you are just reading because you want to read it. At the end of each week, look back at your reading and see how much of it was correct for yourself. I think you will be surprised to find a lot of it will be pretty accurate. When it comes to tarot reading, especially if you do it for others, you need to be confident in yourself, its a big responsibility.

I dont believe the tarot cards show you the future. I dont believe anything shows you the future (and regarding spirits warning of future happenings, I dont believe that either). Perhaps there might be suggestions for the future, but the tarot cards for me are entirely about guidance from past to present happenings/situations in someones life. Most clients prefer to have guidance on current happenings that they can relate to, rather than hear about a 'future', excepting things like pregnancy readings, which I wont do. Finally I dont believe there is any magic in the cards, I love them, after 18 years with them, they are part of me really, but they are still just cards. Why they 'work'? Who knows. I certainly dont and can still be  at how accurate they can be.

  • There are a few genuine mediums about but an awful lot of really bad fakes as well. Ive experienced both. I went to a guy when we were on holiday in Glastonbury-didnt say anything about why I was there just that I was curious when he asked if there was anything in particular I wanted to know about. When we sat down the first thing he said was "the spirits are telling me you have a stalker".I knew in that instant he was genuine.as I had got one--not many peole coming in his door would have I should think!
He went on to tell me about my family, husband and what I did for a living-which confused him, as he picked up stuff about my surroundings where I worked, lots of stuff he couldnt have guessed.-including how to deal with the stalker!
I saw the other end of the scale at a local medium evening in town,The lady even called herself a Reverend--it was very upsetting to see her say the same thing over and over -''fishing '' for info. She could see a man in a cap who liked his garden, or some one in uniform --all to people of an age who would have likely to have lost someone in the era when men all wore caps.
She carried on round the room with people saying ''no'' to most of her questions--and they were questions not statments.I would say she guesed 1 out of 10 correct-but when she tryed to elaborate on the 1 thing she got it all wrong again! It was embarressing to be honest watching her.
She got to a little old lady-and she really kept on at her-about the man in a cap who like growing tomatoes and had a dog.who combed his hair over a bald patch. The little old girl kept saying no to it all.Reverend was at her for 10 mins -in the end the old lady said "I was hoping one of my children might have come through-3 of my sons have died and my daughter was murdered'' The gasp from everyone you can imagine.
I have a gift myself-and had many experiences with premonition, hearing the voices of the dead and seeing things. Its been a toss up which route to go down--the art one or the mediumship one but feel the time will be right for the mediumship one at some point.
its been an interesting ''debate'' on here though!
I might be crazy but I'm not stupid....

I have been to two spiritualist churches and on both occasions received readings. The first one was by a little old lady, wearing a hat similar to one little bo peep would wear, lol. Anyway, she told me that there was a small but very strong willed woman coming through, who died in February, there was a birthday in August, no two, on the same day, and Herbert is looking out for you. Bobby has just made an appearance and somebody says they are saving all their love for you! Well some of it made sense, but some didn't, so I went home and phoned my sister and mum. My nana was little, died in Feb, was very strong willed, her birthday is in August and my daughter was born on the same day. I didn't know a Herbert, until my mum told me it was my grandad (who died before I was born). Bobby was our childhood dog and a friend of my dads who had recently died had always told me that nobody would be good enough for me and I should marry him, that he could offer me a good life etc... so as weird as she looked, she was fairly spot on with all of it.

The second one was a guest speaker at a spiritualist church, the church was very full. He looked straight at me, right at the end, which incidentally was when I got the reading at the first place, and he said that he had a bloke who died of cancer of the stomach or thereabouts saying "army" and the name Mally to him, not Malcolm, because he is likely to hit you, but Mally, then he said, I have your dad I think, the one with the stomach cancer, he's sat on a tank with his mate Norman, and that was it!!!!

Well, my husband is called Malcolm, but he hates it, we all have to call him Mally, except his mum of course, he was in the army when we first got married, my dad died of cancer of the oesophagus (sp) and his mate Norman (the one who was saving all his love for me) were also in the army, and there is a picture of the two of them and one other person, sat on the edge of a tank in a barracks in Germany!!

I refuse to pay for readings, but am quite happy to make donations to the church, especially when the readings were fairly spot on.

as i said before, i often go to a spiritualist church and have seen many mediums most of them are genuine - or genuinely believe in what they are saying. one or two have been outstanding!
only one sticks im my memory as maybe being a fake - didnt get much right and was obviously fishing! dont think he was invited back as the looks on the committee members faces were thunderous! but, he may just have been having a bad night and the spirits werent co-operating!

this question of the ability being a gift from god so shouldnt be charged for. hmmmmm - well having a great singing voice is a gift, so is the ability to paint or draw, yet no-one ever says these people shouldnt capitalise on their gift. but its funny how few of the great painters died penniless - as did Mozart!

is being a good tarot reader a gift i wonder - cos it takes many many hours of dedication and practice to learn.
reiki is a gift - even though i paid for the teaching and attunements! yet i am required to charge. even if its a nominal amount or can barter as its about the exchange of energy. that doesnt make sense does it? reiki is a gift i mean - unless you have been attuned to reiki you wont understand that and if you have then i dont have to explain it! all i can say is i have been given the gift of reiki and feel blessed.
er JAKEM - where are you???? waiting to hear about your experience hun!!!
  • I dont mind paying for reiki or readings -if they are genuine. I think I paid £30 for the hour and half I spent with Steven in Glastonbury- was money well spent I thought, as he settled several things with me that were bothering me. The £10 I paid for the ticket to see the Rev Bev was a complete waste of money as I thought she upset many many people that night who had gone for answers. Yes I can understand that the spirits didnt come through maybe-but if that was the case it would have been better to be honest and say so rather than try and fish and get things so horribly wrong. she did herself no favours that night and did any real, genuine mediums a real dis -service as im sure any first time people wouldnt have gone to see anyone else and written them all off as charlatons.
I had reiki done by one of my students and it was one of the most up-lifting experiences of my life-very hard to explain it but the feeling of euphoria I felt afterwards was amazing. Ive never felt so relaxed and easy on ! Im going to have another session when I go to visit her!
I might be crazy but I'm not stupid....

dianetheartist - Ive heard that many a time after a reiki session!
your student sounds really good! but, to others out there, be aware that reiki certificates can be 'bought' over the internet. and although i am aware that there are good teachers there, there are also some fakes. research your reiki healer before going to them, and if they sound dodgy - stay away!
some reputable schools of reiki are:
Usui reiki ryoho - said to be the original westernised version (which is my school)
Radiance reiki (a breakaway group of Usui)

Usui Reiki (available in Japan - the reiki taught by sensei Usui)

another one is :Seichem (another breakaway group - which i am also Master of)

some people believe that any reiki is ok - others, like myself believe that unless you can trace the attunements back to Usui - its not reiki, but, healing takes many forms and thats not to say the healing isnt effective.
its just that unless you can prove Usui in your lineage, I feel it shouldnt be called reiki. but faith healing.
