How do these slimeballs get away with being legal? Preying on the weak, clearly people who are grieving will believe the few things these creeps can pick up on but the amount of stuff they get wrong, Why does this goverment allow these slimeballs to operate, They make me SICK.

Agreed, The techniques they use actually say a lot more about human nature, than the nature of the "spirit world".

The majority are Charlatans and the remainder are deluded. Not one of them has been able to prove their abilities in a measurable study, In fact there is a worldwide $1 Million prize for anyone that can demonstrate a supernatural ability under agreed-upon scientific testing criteria set up by the James Randi Educational Foundation. Noone has even gotten past the preliminary stage.....
  • True sera if i was to guess a few things about most people on this forum i can bet i would get a few facts right and naive people would believe the facts i had got correct that i had some kind of special powers, The thing that makes me sick is they charge people about £30 a time for 30 mins work, And the poor people actually believe this stuff.

On the one hand I agree, but then I suppose if they offer comfort to people who are grieving then they are providing a service, just not the service that their customers think they are. If you are aware of a particular outfit which is preying on vulnerable people, charging extortionate amounts or using the information they have against someone then I think you can ask Trading Standards to intervene.
OP - have you got a specific case in mind of someone being taken advantage of or is this a more general rant?

My Mum was talking to her friend the other day. Her friend is a Medium. She said that my Grandfather had come through (He's dead) and was holding up a pair of blue booties (I'm pregnant) then he changed it to pink ones......

I've been investigating the paranormal for many years now and have worked with mediums on and off. Some times I've thought they are onto something, at others I've been amazed by the sheer garbage they come out with (on one investigation the medium didn't even sense genuine paranormal phenomonan happening behind him which was seen by two people at the time).

But it's taken the death (by suicide) of a very dear friend of mine just before Christmas for me to understand people's urge to have readings in the hopes of contacting the person they've lost.

I believe the govt is trying to bring in legislation making it near impossible for a medium to charge for their services as they have to be able to prove what they are charging for.
  • Radojojo Yes i agree that sometimes these people can bring some kinda comfort to people who are grieving but they shouldn't be lied to by people pretending they are talking to dead people.

Louise nothing happened, I just know some people close who have lost someone and they have been spending money, £30 a time in fact going to see a woman who lets on she talks to dead people, I know all about cold reading etc and today i decided i would go and not give any clues at all about someone who had passed, Near enough everything this person said was wrong yet her clients still come about 13-14 a day, Think how much that is a day she is making preying on grieving people, This is what makes me really sick to be honest, All i was hearing from everyone was how good this woman is, But as i say again people will only hear things that they want to believe and think this woman or man or whoever is doing it is the best thing.

Hectors house, The sooner the goverment closes these kind of people down the better but i still honestly believe that if there ever was a clamp down there would still be people going to these type of slimeballs to hear a few correct guesses.

Today i let this so called expert think she was getting things correct just to see what she would do and sometimes i would correct her that she was wrong, just to see her reaction and my guesses of what she would do before i went in were spot on, I just wish someone would do something about this very soon as i know of some people who spend a fortune going to these people. Old ladies with very little money etc.
  • If you have the gift..........................you are not supposed to charge for it??

So if you go to see a medium you should not be paying them
  • I agree gotto if God give a gift then to milk people out of there money i can't see him being happy about that, £30 a time isn't bad money for 20 mins work, if your seeing 14 people a day it works out £420 a day without paying tax etc, While the people who i can most likely say have no money are paying for these services beliving them to be true. I guess it explains her lovely house with 32 inch tvs in every room etc. Nice work Mr God to give to someone if these people are true which i am 100% sure they are not, Anyone could do this type of work but i think most people have morals and would never try and con people out off money in this way.

Unfortunately you've hit it on the head yourself - folks who are grieving may feel compelled to visit a medium - the only reason I haven't is because of the knowledge I've built up about them (and my own views on survival of death) over the years.

I still felt the very strong urge to go and pay over my £30 in the immediate aftermath of my friend's death but I understood that to be more about the guilt that surfaces after someone takes their own life.

I did go to see a very famous medium in my area many years ago. This was after the death of someone I knew vaguely (I didn't go to try to communicate with the person though). Sure enough, we got to the end of the session when this person said they could see someone had died recently. When I asked for more info I was literally told "That would be another £25". I left and didn't go back.
