Speed limits & court appearances

I was caught last year doing 97 on motorway by laser camera. Fixed penalty notice, small fine, points, job done. Approx 6 years ago was caught doing 96 on a dual carridgeway, small fine, points, job done.
Ive never speeded on residential roads, both times I was caught I was the only one on that stretch of road at the time (besides the police car obviously) no excuse I know but I think each speeding ticket issued should be judged on its own circumstance, not on a table that says yes or no.
For eg, I think driving over the limit in a residential area should be a far heavier punishment than doing 78 on a motorway. Just my two bobs worth though.10k in 2010 - £350.77 :beer:0 -
Getting back to the original question, there are no nationwide thresholds, it is up to each police/prosecution area to set their own policies on speed detection and prosecution. As suggested by a previous poster the best way to get a "feel" for how cases are dealt with in a particular court is to read the Court reports in the local paper. If you are prosecuted in Court, always worthwhile speaking to a local solicitor who is familiar with the local sentencing practices. They should be able to give you an indication of what to expect - helps avoid nasty suprises.
As suggested by other posters rather than chance it, safer to try and keep to the limits.0 -
I seem to recall that last year (I think) saw a crack down on that sort of thing at some schools in Glasgow. And funnily enough, the cry that went up was that the Police should have been out catching 'real' bad drivers like speeders and suchlike. Once again, they don't even know that they are breaking the law, and causing danger and inconvenience to all the other road users out there.i agree, but thats if your not stuck behind a double parker sitting on the zig zags in her zafira.
That really annoys me, they moan moan moan about even doing 20mph outside the school but there the one sitting on the zig-zags causing a potential hazard.
Case in point, I spotted a snippet in the paper a week or two ago, where a parent was chucking out all sorts of abuse because someone told her to shift the car off the zig-zags..Fight Crime : Shoot Back.
It's the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without being seduced by it.

Again back on topic - may get a fine or full disqual depending on speed relative to limits, but read any summons carefully. Depending on the offence(s) charged - and with camera offences there may be a related "failure to provide proper information as to identity of driver within the time allowed" or other offences if stopped on the road. You may get penalty points on your licence which can add up to a disqual.
Also different and more stringent rules apply to newly-qualified drivers.
And don't forget any mandatory retest.
