I got stopped two years ago at 98mph on motorway and got away with a fixed-penalty. No court appearance, no ban.

As is so often the case with limits, the speed limits in the UK were arbitrarily decided in the dim and distant past. The current limits in many areas are completely wrong, be it too low or too high (although the push for 20 limits outside schools are a welcome change, they are rather pointless when you consider that many people at school time aren't paying attention at any speed).

The earlier question asks if there is any leeway re. being checked by police. While many will bang on about the limit being a hard limit (30 is the limit, 30.000001 makes you a baby killer), the reality is that your average police officer is also human, and knows that the average driver can drift one or two mph over the limit without being a danger. (Indeed, during the driving test, I was encouraged to exceed the limit on my speedo by a few mph) As long as it is obvious that the transgression is not by a massive amount, and there are no other obvious signs of wrong-doing (haring round corners, tailgating etc), they will generally let it go.

Guess you missed the point of all those adverts then.
Would you rather be hit by a 4x4 doing 20mph, or one doing 40mph?

like he says dont speed ,speed limits are there for a reason you go over it and the chances of killing someone in an accident grow and it takes a lot longer to stop in a built up area if a child runs out in front of you but you being micheal schumacker or whoever will be the best driver in the world and manage to stop not ,keep up your speeding and maybe you will get banned by totting up points then the roads will be safer for people who do stick to the speed limits goodluck cause you will need it everybody gets caught sometime

Yes just drive around all day staring at your speedo, never mind the multiple hazards all around you, so long as you make sure that little needle doesn't go over the limit then everything and everybody will be alright and nobody will get hurt !!

Over the past 10 years or so every speedo I have checked with a GPS (on a straight road) has over-read by 10%.

I like it, if you have an accident, you will admit it's going to be your fault aleady.

Both of mine are near as fudge it bang on.... (one car is non standard drive ratio and non standard speedo for year which happily seem to be spot on!) The other, 100% standard car is at most 2mph out and thats at the kind of speeds mentioned above

My personal bike has an error of 6% at an indicated 70mph. My professional bike has a calibrated and certified speedo - so no excuses!
