Speed limits & court appearances

Hi,

I read a website months ago which detailed the speed at which if you are caught you go straight to court. For 70mph areas I think this was 94mph but I can't seem to find the website anymore.

Any ideas?

20mph limit. up to 35 = fine. 35+ = ban
30mph limit. up to 50 = fine. 50+ = ban
40mph limit. up to 66 = fine. 66+ = ban
50mph limit. up to 76 = fine. 76+ = ban
60mph limit. up to 86 = fine. 86+ = ban
70mph limit. up to 96 = fine. 96+ = ban

The following is very interesting:

If you have been caught for a regular speeding violation – usually less than 40% over the speed limit, you’ll probably be handed a fixed penalty notice that is given to you right away.

When you have been caught going more than 20 mph over the speed limit, chances are that you will have a case in which a summons is going to be recommended for you.

Sometimes, such as situations where you are going more than 30 mph over the speed limit, you might be imposed with an immediate ban or disqualification

When travelling far in excess of the speed limit, there is risk of an immediate ban, based on the speed recorded. Although the Courts around the country have their own local practices, by and large if you are more than 40% over the speed limit, you are at risk of an immediate disqualification, although there seems to be more tolerance when the speed limit broken is 30/40 mph.

I think bearing the above in mind I'd at most do upto the following:

20mph limit. up to 28 = fine. 28+ = ban
30mph limit. up to 42 = fine. 42+ = ban
40mph limit. up to 56 = fine. 56+ = ban
50mph limit. up to 70 = fine. 70+ = ban
60mph limit. up to 80 = fine. 80+ = ban
70mph limit. up to 90 = fine. 90+ = ban

It's more simple than that. 30 over is a recommended ban.

At the end of the day these are recommendations. Yes the figures are about right but dont rely on them. All it takes is to upset the police officer on the day and they go out the window.

That table is rubbish btw. You just need to read the local press to see that people do not get banned for speeding at 20mph over the limit. For 60/70 mphs roads, 100 is usually required for a ban.

From my experience (on 60 and 70 mph roads) is

60mph road: 60-85 = fixed penalty issued by Police at side of road. 85+ = court and at mercy of judge. I know this because a few years back I got caught at 93 on a 60 limit country road and was told by the Police that 85 was their limit for fixed penalty. For the record, it got me 5 points and a £265 fine.

70mph road: 70-95 = fixed penalty 95+ = court. I (oddly enough) got caught at 93 in a 70 about 12 months after the above, this was a fixed penalty.

Both occasions were dead straight roads, summer, good visibility and no other vehicle in sight, hence no careless/dangerous charge.

Please bear in mind that even within the 25mph allowable for fixed penalty, if the Police consider the driving to be dangerous or careless you will go to court regardless.

Does anyone know the speed you can do without be caught whatsoever? I've read it's 10% + 1mph, sometimes +2 e.g. 70mph = 77+1 or 77+2?

How many times. There is no definitive speed. There are guidelines. If you dont want to be caught dont speed.
