this thread just reminded me of this.
you'll have to watch their demo, i originally came across this at the Ideal Home show (tickets got through MSE) its actually really useful but i couldnt justify dropping £99 on one, useful as it is.

Been thinking about getting a dicta-phone and taping myself going.... '' oh, that's interesting........really........tell me more.......go on......'' and when I get one of these calls, put the dicta-phone on loopback play and leave them together on the table to see how long one of these call centre workers can chat forFreebies you don't really need can be given to your local Hospice Charity shop so they can raise funds they desperately need. Pass on your good fortune :A0

Don't bet on it, they'll leave you a message asking YOU to call THEM back....lolFreebies you don't really need can be given to your local Hospice Charity shop so they can raise funds they desperately need. Pass on your good fortune :A0 -
Get yourself an 09*** number then when they call, tell them the bill payer is on this number, chat to them for ages raking £1 at a time .... even better still fill in lots of surveys posting the 09*** number and retire
I'm perfectly sure that these outfits have their call centres set up so 09 numbers are barred and/or the staff have been alerted to the large additional costs of calling them.
You might perhaps get away with earning some revenue share on your own 0844 or 0871 number.0 -

I have a friend who has one of these and he can never work out how to add my CLI to the accepted callers list so I always have to go through all the hoops to prove I am a human caller and not a call robot. I also don't see how Truecall prevents a manned sales call where the call worker ignores all your blandishments on the recorded message about not being interested in buying things and still holds to speak to you.
I also don't see how they can possibly justify the £99 price tag for such simple chip based technology, especially when a laptop only now costs from £200. If it cost £35 then I might get one myself.0 -

What does it say to the caller? Does it tell them to ring back during daytime hours.0 -

yes i agree, the box itself probably does cost about £35 but there is also an online service thats part of it, and i supposed the hosting and everything else wont be subscription based, so its got to be funded up front.
the way its demo'd to everyone, the caller has to anounce who they are, if they say, they're such and such a person from better homeware products, then you can decide whether to speak to them or not, in theory a good idea, in practice, i guess not0 -

You are meant to add the Caller Ids of all your regular calls to a trusted list who do not get the announcement and just ring your phone straight away as normal. Unfortunately some telecoms providers other than BT are now barring CLI presentation to the called party as standard unless their customers complain. Also some Truecall users (like my elderly friend) do not seem to be sufficiently savvy to know how to add me to the trusted callers list.
Personaly I find it more satisfactory to speak to these non allowed callers and find out what company they are calling from and then give them hell about why they have called without my permission and then report them to the TPS and the Information Commissioner.
I doubt that the manufacture of the item at wholesale prices comes to more than £20, even in these small volumes. The rest is all middle men, marketing costs and profit. If they were made in larger numbers it should be possible to do so for about £5 per item.0
