You know sometimes sarcasm is wasted on people! I was saying in an exagrated way that there is no point dimming these bulbs they are dim anyway.

Still no critiscm of these things is allowed we must all believe that these good others bad and all herrotics must be tied to a post and burned.

It goes along with the spurious carrier bag argument and other green myths that we must all believe and if we don't we will be forced to.
I started with nothing and I am proud to say I still have most of it left.

You know sarcasm, when written, often requires a little more embellishment than when spoken (hint: that's why emoticons were invented).

Only if you carbon offset and use an FSC certified post.

Anyway, on a more serious note, I recently bought an Osram 21w light bulb that is really bright, and doesn't seem to take any time warming up either. It's way too bright for the room and I'll be looking for a dimmer one to replace it soon. The old problems with lower light output than the bulbs they claimed to replace, and taking time to reach maximum output seem to have been solved.

However, most are still not suitable for dimmer switches. It will overheat and burn out. If you want to use them then you'll have to make do without dimming somehow. It hasn't been a problem however, if I want less light I'll use the table lamp(s).
  • I just bought some dimmable Megaman CFLs (for use with ordinary dimmer switch), but I'm not that impressed. 10% brightness isn't nearly as dim as I imagined it would be. They work, just not as well as I hoped. The incandescents are back in now, and I'm hoping to get my money back.

It probably is 10% brightness, but your eyes perceive brighness logarithmically (two windows do not make a room look twice as bright as one window) so the difference will seem to be much less. What happens when you dim below that level - do they just go out?

  • Hi we have a dimmer switch on our stairs and bedroom and both run on energy saving bulbs. Both seem to run ok unless have them turned to full, turn down a notch and run ok.:j
  • We have a thread similar to this already, I'll add your query to it so all the replies are together. Posts are listed in date order so you'll need to read from the beginning to catch up :)

    MOVING THREADS FOR BETTER RESPONSES

There's enough here to put me off risking using low-energy bulbs with a dimmer switch any more, even though they do seem to work OK when the dimmer's on full:

Thanks very much to the poster above for this - there looks to be a pretty substantial fire risk, even though everything might seem to be working fine.
