You mean http://www.megamanuk.com/products/pdfs/dors-series.pdf ? Stepped brightness levels, like I described earlier. They seem to have the option of a special controller for them though - but that is not an ordinary dimmer.
Time is an illusion - lunch time doubly so.
  • As an alternative i have found something which may be useful to you. You would have to get rid of the dimmer switch though. It is a lightbulb by Philips called the 2 in 1 Nightlight. It is a 9 watt bulb which if you switch it on once gives a normal light, then if you switch it of/on again within 3 seconds it becomes a lovely orange nightlight. Its a very subtle glow, but plenty enough so soothe the kids. I bought mine in ASDA. I hope this helps.

Does anyone why you cannot use energy saving bulbs with dimmer switches?

By this I mean is it just that the dimmer function does not work, or are they unsafe or anything like that? The reason I ask is that the lights in our lounge are on a dimmer but we do not really use it (always either fully on or off), and with it being the main room we use I would like to use energy saving bulbs.

I have just bought some cheap energy saving bulbs from Tesco, so would not mind risking damaging them. However, my boyfriend will not let me use them as he is worried that it might be a fire hazard or something.
Proud to be a moneysaver!
  • This link should answer your question : http://www.grist.org/advice/ask/2006/06/07/dimmer/

Whilst dimmable CFL are available they are usually only the "night-light" type mentioned above, or they require dedicated dimmer controls that cost a packet (the bulbs are pricey too..).

In short. You cannot dim a normal (cheap) CFL.
  • I've come across the megaman bulbs too. Found a 10% discount off them at https://www.efficientlight.co.uk if you mention the Carbon Coach.

We had dimmers in our four bedrooms and in the living room, so I made my OH replace them with regular switches so we could fit energy efficient bulbs and save some more cash, though we did leave them in the living room I only ever use the lamps (all fitted with EE bulbs anyway) so I don't feel too guilty.

I would give them megaman bulbs a go though if I started using the dimmer again.

you can't get low energy bulbs for dimmers....... they just break

you will either need to stock up with standard bulbs or replace your switch when standard bulbs will not be available

a landfill will be created just with all the dimmer switches that will be thrown away (saving the planet)

OK, here's my tuppence worth on the subject of low emission bulbs

megamanuk.com; £9.95 a bulb from lamps2udirect.com). These are compatible with all dimmer switches, endorsed by the Energy Saving Trust. They have a four-step dimming system, from 100 per cent to 5 per cent brightness in four easy twiddles of the knob.Despite the expense, I am very tempted. I note the endorsements of Megaman in earlier posts, but has anyone tried these DorS bulbs?
