I wonder if anyone produces a motion detector that fits between socket and bulb? That would be great for my hall!

Do you mean one that 'plugs' into a pendant light fitting and the light bulb then screws into the motion detector? If so the answer is yes, but they did look a little bulky. eBay I think ....

Thanks - I did have a look but obviously couldn't find the right search term.

    jap200,
Do you have a socket on your landing ?
instead of leaving the light on for the kids, you can get those things that are like a plug but they light up. I don't think they give a lot of light out but enough to see by if you get up in the dark, and not so bright that it will disturb the kids if you were to leave their bedroom door open.

we don't have a socket there so can't use a night light.

    Guess not then.

Personally I would stop bothering with these energy saving bulbs if you want dimmers just do what others are doing and go out and buy a large stock of the bulbs that go in the light fitting and continue using normal bulbs.

the light given out by these light saving bulbs is less than 1 candle power anyway so using a dimmer on them is pointless.

(Can anyone tell if I am a fan of these pointless things or not?)
I started with nothing and I am proud to say I still have most of it left.

Some low energy bulbs are very dull, granted, but the technology is advancing and some brands seem to provide excellent light. I have calculated that I would use £21 of electricity each month if I had just my hall and living area lights on for ten hours a day. That might seem unlikely, but I live in a north-facing flat so it's not a million miles off reality! My last quarterly bill was £101 so lighting represents a substantial percentage of my bill. This is the green and ethical board on a money saving forum, so it's not unreasonable for us to discuss options.

I don't know where you dreamed that one up.

I have a 14w low energy light bulb on my desk that is 800 lumens. according to the website below that is the equivelent of 800/12.57 = 63.64 candles.
