I agree with Mikey72 - your broker should be trying to get to the bottom of this and not providing you with such a lacklustre response.

Who are you insured with? Check your policy and get on the phone to the Company direct to find out why. Could it be that your vehicle is brand new and the insurers have not yet provided a grouping for it?

If inevitably they don't/won't provide cover then kick up merry hell to get a refund on a pro-rata basis. What would have happened if you had to change your vehicle because it had been involved in an accident - insurers don't (in my humble experience) dictate what cars people can drive (unless of course it is age related (e.g. 17 year old wanting a Porsche) etc or they maybe only insure for a certain manufacturer.

Seems to me your broker isn't doing a very good job and can't be bothered!

Sounds possible the broker cannot find the car on their system, could be their spelling...

Which broker and which insurer is it?

Is it MMA by any chance

i thought many cars were imports, not all made in the uk. This one is sold by the main dealership, its a year 2000 model. its group 3, i agree the broker isnt too bothered. So I'm keen on getting a refund for selling me a policy where I can't even do a change of vehicle to a normal car sold in the UK

    Daihatsu Cuore
  • Well the obvious place to start is to see if this company will insure someone with similar details to the OP for this car. If they will, then you know they are lying and they can do a switch.

I doubt its an import in terms of normal imports, the car is destined for the UK market. Yes effectively most cars are imports as they aren't built in Britain, but they have been built for the UK market. If this indeed a grey import the dealer should have informed you of this.

If you have bought the car brand new from a Daihatsu dealership it will be a UK car.

Here is the brochure for the car Cuore/Charade

Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.

Not sure that model was every a UK model. The link provided above is to the .com website - their worldwide pages. The UK website does not have that model listed. If the vehicle is a grey import, most insurers won't touch it with a barge pole.

This is because the UK has by far in a way the highest vehicle security levels of any country worldwide, and safety equipment tends also to be much better.

As stated above by others, there is no miss-selling issue here. You entered an annual contract based upon the information provided. The partial subject matter of the insurance, the motor vehicle, has been changed and so the fundamental basis on which the contract has formed has also changed - the insurer is under no obligation to continue the cover. This does not mean you have been refused insurance, just that they have declined to over cover for the vehicle.

However, as also said above, I would say the broker should be doing a better job and finding out why they won't cover the car and then finding you alternative quotes.

If they didnt say at the start it could not be changed for an alternative vehicle, or if they did not ask you to check the terms before proceeding with cover, then you could claim you were missold the policy and get a full and total refund.

I'm sorry but this is not at all correct.

The insurer offered an annual contract based upon the agreed details - they are under no obligation to accommodate any mid-term changes to those details.

Furthermore no intermediary is obliged to disclose at at inception every underwriting criteria of a particular scheme. Firstly they will not know the information and in any case the criteria will change so frequently that it would not be worth doing even if it were possible. If I had to make a guess as to the reason for the decline, my money would be on the insurer imposing a minimum vehicle value on the scheme and declining anything that falls under that. But it could be down to any number of other reasons.

£16 seems an awfully low return premium if you have paid in full rather than by instalments. Ask them for a breakdown of how they have come to this figure.
