Camera Techies and my new toy.

I have just taken delivery of my new toy. A Canon EOS 350D.
There are many reasons for this purchase but the main ones are.
1: Loved my Canon SLR 35MM
2: All my lenses and accessories fit
3: Can't wait to explore the digital world of photoghrapy.

I want to know what it the difference between pictures taken in Jpeg and Raw?
Where can I learn more about the capabilities of this camera?
Editing and picture enhancement?

Raw mode is uncompressed and will produce very large sized picture files. Most users use jpeg.

See here for loads of info and also read the owners opinions and see the forum.

there are advanced editing features built in to the camera you can do to a raw file that you cant do to a jpeg. Buy a huge memory card and shoot in raw would be my advice as there is no compresion used yeah you end up with large files sizes but the photos will be perfect conpresion can redude quality. If your used to 35mm and using SLR perfection is what you shuld be looking for.

Don't get to hung up the technology. No one looks at a great picture and wonders about the file format. You have a nice camera but stick to JPEG until you have nothing else in you photography that requires your attention.

I want to be able to take pictures and then crop and print........say just the head and shoulder part etc.

Can any one recommend a printer just for photographs?
    What type and why?

You can crop and print using Irfanview which is free.

I have an Epson Stylus Photo 790 but unless they are used regularly, they need a lot of nozzle cleaning before each use and the ink cartridges and glossy photo paper can work out quite expensive!

I get the vast majority of my photos printed at my local ASDA and the results are brilliant.

if you dont know much about f numbers, exposure, iso, etc.. learn.

basics you need to master if you dont know, in order

    Shutter speed
    Aperture
    Focal length

    use a tripod.

ive not really used 35mm cams - only digtal so im not 100% on the simalaritys to them. Ya got a good cam.

Thing is, film lens are not the same as digital - they will still work but not to the 100% ability of the digital ones.

post some pics when youve taken them :p

no - if you want to print them, then you will have to spend a bit of money on a printer (ie £150+) - why? the quality of images will be better.

If you want to print not alot off, send them away to places such as jessops to print - they are reasonable for printing and print them on HQ paper

if you still want to buy a printer, i would go for the HP Photosmart. You should PP your images before you print them. Use a circula polizer aswell as you will get the best out of your images.

also, i will say, raw format is ok but if you are good at it, use jpeg med - it will tkae up about 1/4 of the space (2mb) but you will have to be good with your pp at the end (ie using photoshop or any photo editing sw)

When I bought the lenses to go with my 35mm I was adviced to by the ultra sonic lenses. So the compatability with digital is better.

I bought the Canon 350D for the familiarity and I haven't really used it yet. It arrived today, but I'm open to any digital photographic advice.

I personally use the Nikon D50 - but the features are about the same. I agree with the lenses but they are not proper digital - though, you wont really notice much difference.

350D is a good body - but i will say that if you decide to buy more lenses for it, you will be "tied" in to the canon family so your next body will have to be a canon - likewise with myself, i am tied in to the Nikon family. no point spending £3k on lenses to have to spend that again ontop of a body for a different make camera....

a good forum you can use is dpreviews.com - they have a lot of professional photographers that use DSLR's.

Perosnally though, on printing, unless you plan to print loads, burn them to DVD or CD and play in dvd player - or those u want to print, send them off :)

    any help, just ask :)
