Dealing with the green eyed monster

  • As long as you think money = happiness.

It will be difficult to fight the green eyes monster.

Lots of very rich people get divorced, have bad health, suffer from depression etc etc.

Don't shut up Sparkle. This has been a lovely thread to read and I agree that there are a lot of people worse off. But one thing I like to think about is that whatever I have achieved I have done it myself. That is a great feeling and no one can take that away from you. So when you are debt free and can look to a brighter future financially you will know that no one bailed you out.

I don't get jealous of specific people I know, but I can get the funny feeling if I look at magazines aimed at rich people - you know, full of expensive clothes and stuff. I have to avoid materialism-oriented marketing or I get kinda funny about my own situation.

It does help to try and realize that, compared to the vast majority of all the human beings who have ever lived in the world, you're really, really rich. Probably in the top 1%. Your average suburban dog lives in greater luxery than Louis XIV, if you think about it.

    Here here !!

I think that is what is keeping me going in my debt-free quest, knowing that at the end of it all, "I" have achieved it, and no-one else, no bail-outs, hand-outs etc etc.

I look forward to be able to pay for a large-ish purchase having the money there, and not relying on credit in any way.

Chin up everyone ..... ITS FRIDAY !!!!! :j

It's true we all become the green eyed monster at one time or another, but in addition to thinking how very lucky we all are (we all have the ability to be talking to and encouraging one another in this forum for one thing!) I'd like to say that I've had a great day today seeking out the best price for toothpaste :D Perhaps not the most exciting thing for most people, but every little helps!!
We are all in control of our debts/lives and that makes us strong and capable people in my eyes...with shiny, clean teeth :D

In everyone's life, there is a point when we can gather our thoughts about who WE are, as a person. That is what makes you rich or poor. I have friends who are very rich and then others who are not, and then me who is debt-ridden at the moment. But having my health and all my faculites in order, I know that life might not be the same as one of a rich person, but I will lead a good, safe and a happy life (once the debt is paid off).
And I am sure that most of us on this DFW board will too. Just being here as a part of a community with a common interest, we can 'hold' each other up and at the end of it all, we will be more responsible people. There are a lot of people out there who are living a rich life but are very poor in other ways.
Chin up and hang in there sparkle-monkey. At least you are with people who care and happiness will be yours, be it from financial riches or otherwise.

WOW! What a great thread to read last thing on a friday afternoon when you're feeling down about not being able to afford a take away!
I also know plenty of people like this and like many of you have said, it'll be a shock when 'mummy and daddy's' money runs out. I was offered £3k at the start of this year from my dad to pay off my credit card and I said no. Since then it's been a struggle but I'm glad I didn't take it because I've come to appreciate alot in life that I never could before because I was so hung up on buy expensive clothes or make up or stuff! Us lot on here are far better off than any of those people because we all now know what life is really all about

    nice weekend everyone xx

    is quite natural.

Due to an inheritance, hubby and I will should be in the lovely position of not having a mortgage and still be under 40; however I know both of us would rather have the relative alive and well and still pay our mortgage each month than the relative be dead and our mortgage paid off.

We went on holiday last year and got friendly with another family, who had children our son's age. Whilst our son was quite happy to make do with what he was given (which wasn't alot), their children threw a major strop if they couldn't have money on demand.

I admit, I do suffer from the green-eyed monster on occasion, in a related-but-not-just-money kinda way. I have a friend who is a few years older, who excelled at uni (as did I) then went on with ruthless ambition knowing exactly what she wanted and here she is, early thirties nearly having achieved her career ambitions along with her darling OH who also has a great career and two young children which is what she always wanted.

I however sailed through my first degree, did my postgrad and decided I simply wasn't good enough to do what I wanted to do. So I changed tack and now work for a charity, in a great job but with rubbish wages. I took on OH's debts in my name when we found out I was pregnant after four months of going out. I am in a career which excites me but pays little, supporting an OH who is doing his studying now, looking after one toddler and three days' overdue with DD#2, neither of which were planned after swearing I would be child-free forever :o

I find it frustrating that I have a string of great qualifications next to my name yet have to explain to those who don't know why I am in the job I am in which has nothing to do with what I studied for 5 years, whilst I look on enviously at my friend who excels in her job, has a lovely house, holidays whenver she wants, can buy anything for her children and still manages to volunteer around her full-time work.

However, I know that despite working, both me and OH get to spend quality weekday time with our DD arranged around our schedules which my friend would love but cannt afford to do as she has financial commitments that prohibit anything but full-time and more hours; we might not have a lovely (read: more than two bedroomed!) house and may rent but we live in a great area with one of the best schools in the city on our doorstep, whereas she cannot get DD#1 into the school she wants because it would mean a sequence of adjustments to her/OH's work schedules; we can't buy everything we want for our child but we're working on teaching her (eventually them!) the value of moneysaving and counting yr pennies; we might not have a lot of time left over after family and work commitments but know that valuable spare minutes are spent having fun with the family and friends rather than rushing about after a 10-hour day at work getting DD to the babysitter (not her OH as he is away for weeks on end on business and hardly knows his children) whilst trying to be on time for the business flight which will take her away from home again for a few days.

Yes I can see both sides, and there's so much more to life as well as money :j It is difficult though when yr sturuggling on a daily basis, to see through it and value what you have that can't be counted in notes and coins.
