My local gym in Finsbury Park, MoreFit, runs free BMF-style fitness classes every Saturday afternoon in Finsbury Park itself - they call it FreeFit and, whilst it's obviously to promote the gym it's not a short term thing, they run beginner, intermediate and advanced groups and have done every weekend for 6/8 months, come rain and come shine. There may be similar initiatives in other areas too?0

Hi there. anyone had any success haggling with Fitness First (Black label clubs)? Thinking of taking the plunge but would like to save if I can.
thanks.0 -
I just took the advice in the article and found my local council-run gym/pool to look at cheaper memberships. They wanted £46.95 per month for peak time (not working hours) use of the pool, fitness suite and classes. In Beckenham.
I work in central London, and I can go to the Oasis Centre, sign up for £28 per month and get everything there. How the hell can a local, council-owned facility in the 'burbs be more expensive than central London? Unbelievable!
Think I'll just buy an exercise bike instead. Some days, it's just not worth chewing through the leather straps....
LB moment - March 2006. DFD - 1 June 2012!!! DEBT FREE!
May grocery challenge £45.61/£1200 -
i'm after a private gym with some decent classes (am into yoga, BC and I'd like to try Zumba) with a steam and sauna (pref. single sex ones) - anything like that in Nott'm? i used to belong to Holmes Place by the train station (now Virgin) but can't afford it. want something much cheaper than that!0

Sorry if this has already been posted (haven't time to read discussion in full as just having a cheeky 5 minutes browse of the weekly deals in work time :A)
Xercise 4 Less is a budget gym and there are only 4 clubs so far in Castleford, Wakefield, Stockton on Tees and Leeds (I know - good stuff in the North it's a miracle!). Anyways, they are £14.99 per month including schedules of over 40 classes a week. There's free on site parking too.
Even better for me, I get a corporate discount, so for me, it's £9.99 a month. I live about 10 miles from my local club, so it's about £3 round trip in petrol for a visit which isn't ideal but I am still saving believe it or not...
Current membership £33 per month (includes swimming, but I never go). Attending the gym once a week. Currently taking Pilates classes and Yoga classes once a week each, but these are small classes and not included in my membership, so I have to pay £3.20 per class. Plus I have to pay to park which is £2 for each attendance total £24. Total current spend £82.60 per month / 4 weeks roughly.
I know - scandalous, right?!
Xercise 4 Less = £9.99 plus 12 x £3 petrol = £36 total £45.99 which means I am saving £36.61 a month.
PLUS I am scheduling visits to my family who live much closer to the gym around my new classes - meaning I am saving the petrol really too. I am well happy with this, and if you're fortunate enough to live even closer then you will really make big savings.
I just hope they open up even more branches!x

Thanks, we've added this one to the guide.0 -
I have been using Fitness4Less since last Summer, the Birmingham branch, but they are dotted around the country.
I can highly recommend, as for only £14.99 per month you not only have full use of the gym but also classes,I use both, doing Pilates and Pump and Sculpt classes, but there are several others fitball, spin ,abs blast, step and tone and more, and of course the gym, really good equipment ,and staff are knowledgeable, friendly and helpful, facilities showers, hairdryers etc; are good.
You join online,£25.00 joining fee, but are not tied in to a contract, only £14.99 a month for as long as you want.0 -

Thats the price of my local gym too- not same borough but is in London. They're all about the same and its a joke- what is even more infuriating is that most of the time they're not even clean, they allow 14-16yr old kids to workout from 3pm which is just insane- most of them seemed to see the gym as a playground but with things to mess with- thats before you realise most of the gym staff are too busy with other members to deal with the "lets set up all the treadmills in a row then run across them..." type games.
Its actually cheaper for me to join LA fitness- and (although only marginally) they are cleaner and offer more.
I can understand high prices but only when they are value for money, shop around people!0 -

My local gym (council run) is £33 per month - I'm in the North East, which is supposed to be substantially cheaper than down South. Plus, you have to pay for parking which is £2 a visit. It's absolutely scandalous - and a lot of the facilities are quite dilapidated. Now, down the road about 10 miles away the council gym costs £19. Still more expensive than Xercise 4 Less (in my previous post) but much cheaper than our Borough Council gym.
You have my sympathies! X0
