  • I've seen an advert a few weeks ago in a Northants local paper (Chron I think) showing free one month membership at a newly open top Notch gym in Northampton. Does anyone know if this offer is still valid?

    Many thanks

I pay £36 a month for use of the local leisure centre, run on behalf of the council by a small private company (which runs 4 centres in this area). This gives me access to the gym, informal personal training, small spa, 25m pool & discounts on bookings in the sports hall for other sports. The gym is ok, it's not as high-tech as a couple other local gyms, but all the times I've been in there it's been busy but I've always been able to find a machine.

Free parking in one of the various council car-parks after 4pm, and the pool has good length "adult" lane sessions, with the gym being over 18s (so no kids). I know I could go elsewhere and get a cheaper deal from another gym, but then the money saved in monthly memberships will soon be eaten up by increased fuel use/parking

I'd be delighted if gym membership was that low where I live and I'd say you got a pretty good deal! The council run gyms near me which are in bad condition, handed over to anyone over 14 (and it seems mainly the very silly and immature kids that like to go into the gyms) and also many uni students mean that you'd be hard pushed not to find a queue if visiting after 3pm week days and all day saturday, then theres the litter which sometimes isn't cleared away daily, the single travel hairdryer which is often broken and the showers themselves which spray (and I mean just spray- do not work like a normal shower) for 10 second periods....all this, for £44 a month.

Yup, I'd say for £36 a month your doing pretty well!

    Hello everybody,

Sorry to shamelessly promote what our fitness community does and provides in the Greater Manchester and Cheshire areas, but I thought MoneySavingExpert would be a good place to compare what we offer with other outdoor fitness class companies in Manchester/Stockport and see what everybody in this forum thought!

    First, to the facts!
    • Everybody is entitled to a completely complimentary session with no obligation to join.
    • We don't charge joining fees.
    • Nor do we expect a minimum term of membership. Memberships roll monthly and all we ask is that we're given a full months notice to remove leavers from our submission files.
    • In Manchester/Stockport alone, we run over 24 cross fitness training classes per week, designed for all abilities.
    • For 24 classes per week, a full membership is £30 per month, a corporate discount which is available for public service staff and local companies who have organised the rate with us, as well as those who get onboard within 24 hours of their first session, is only £24 per month and we have a conscessionary rate for under 21's and over 60's which is £20 per month.
    • Full Unlimited Membership - £30 per month
    • Corporate Unlimited - £24 per month
    • Conscessionary Unlimited - £20 per month
    • We also do a Pay As You Train voucher for 6 sessions at £36 (£6 per session)
    • Members get a free T-shirt for bringing a friend to a free session.
    • Classes are mornings, evenings and weekends to beat shift pattern barriers!
We truly are a fitness community, with 260+ Bioticfit members within a year and a half, all of different abilities and goals but all within our great culture and ethos of putting in 100%, enjoying your fitness journey and meeting people.

We run runfit running coaching classes, circuitfit equipment based circuit training classes, getstartedfit fitness games based classes, militaryfit military fitness classes, flexifit yoga and pilates classes, abfit abs blasting sessions and parkfit, a true reflection of our cross fitness training ethos of variety, where we do all sorts from sports conditioning to martial arts based movements. There is something for everyone and everything for someone. We have a great online fitness community (search bioticfit on facebook) as well as a website (type bioticfit in your search engine) if anybody would like to look and let me know your thoughts!

Always appreciate feedback on our mission to keep improving what we offer and what we're hoping to achieve!

Anyway, sorry for spamming but look forward to hearing everyone's opinions!

  • The Fitness Unit offers 7 days free membership with no obligation to join. They also offer short term memberships with lots of payment options. They run indoor classes and Bootcamps in Suffolk but are expanding across the country so keep a look out for them.

Check out The Gym Group, they've got new gyms opening all the time and my membership is £10.99 a month.

They have non of the bells and whistles like sauna, pool etc, but have loads of cardio kit and plenty of free/machine/cable weights. They also offer virtual classes.

I'm basically just looking for some advice on whether or not I should join Virgin Active without them giving me a discount. Please read on and let me know what you reckon...

I've been in touch with a Virgin Active gym in London for about two weeks after having a free trial. I really like the gym and will use it, so am ready to join. But I don't want to pay any more than I have to, and have heard gyms are prime targets for getting a discount - problem is, I'm not having much luck!

    - I am entitled to the 18-25 membership option because of my age, which is about £20 cheaper than the standard membership and only comes with a 6 month contract (instead of 12). However it does not allow use of other clubs, something I would definitely want due to my work location and has a joining fee of £30.

    - The next option is a 12 month membership of around £80 per month with a £25 joining fee. This is what I would have to go for if I wanted multi-club membership. In February they are giving 12 months for the price of 10, but this seems to be a long-running offer so doesn't seem very special.

In various telephone calls they've made to me, I've said:
    - I've had a better offer at LA Fitness
    - Reminded them of my age
    - Have offered to pay the year's membership up front for a discount.

They've been really friendly but simply won't budge, saying they 'treat all members the same so don't haggle on prices'. Not even a reduction in the joining fee! Is this pretty standard practice, or does anyone else know any tricks to help drive a bargain. A friend suggests I wait until the end of the month to see if they give me a call with an offer, but I really want to join now!

Just thought I'd ask for some last-minute advice before giving in and paying.

    Thanks!
what i did was head to the one closest to work (ie, the one id use most often) and told them the price of the one that would be my 'ideal gym, but only used on weekends due to location' and BOOM they dropped the joining fee, and gave me the 'weekend gym' price for joining their gym. open to use other gyms too. plus month to month, so can cancel anytime.

There was no way i was locking myself into anything more than 3months.

VA mainly do not haggle... the most you'll get is the joining fee quashed, but go in knowledgeable and you'll come out with what you want or even more... in my case. you need to come off like you 'really' want to join there and then on the spot... but not on their rules, per say...

also don't do it over the phone. go in person and feed off their behaviour.

I joined my 'weekend' VA year ago and instantly they said i could 'join for free'. so i'm amazed they r pushing the fee... maybe it's a non-performing gym?
  • I joined Xercise4 less about a month ago in Wigan. They are only in the North of England at the moment.
Brand new equipment, & lots of it, large spaces, about 40 classes included, spin, bodypump, zumba, bokwa, bodycombat, bootcamps and many more. No pool or sauna.
I paid up front for a year about £130 to make me use it, and I am.
    Or u can do £9.99 a month off peak, £12.99 a month full (6am till 10pm, 8 - 8 weekends). 30 day rolling contract.
Worth looking at if you don't want to pay a lot or have a long lock-in :j
