My 17-year-old daughter wanted to improve her fitness prior to joining the RAF. I signed her up for the free 3-day pass at the LA fitness gym in Fareham Hants. They called her the next day telling her to go in to the gym the following day to book her sessions. When she turned up, one of their staff told her that she didn't look like the type who would buy a membership so she couldn't have the free 3-day pass. They were very rude and she was quite upset.

    Thats shocking!

I'd call up their Head Office and make an official complaint- they seem to have a decent head office- I complained about the lack of hygene in my LA fitness before I left last year, the very next day I went (I had to give 28 days notice) and noticed a few important looking LA officials doing checks, talking to staff in meetings... it could have been a coincidence but I had never in my 13 months (several days a week) seen this happen before.

There is another gym opening up near to us in Warrington. It is one of the Pure Gym group and seems quite a good deal. There is a £10 joining fee and then £9.99 a month for the first 12 months (special opening offer), then it goes to £16.99. You can cancel your membership at any time, so no contract which is good. It is a no frills gym, so no pool, steam room, sauna etc but it is open 24/7 although it is only manned from 8 am to 8 pm monday to friday and 10 am to 5 pm weekends.
  • Hi all!

I would like to share the best deal I have negotiated with David Lloyd so that you may also quote it and beat them down!

I was initially offered the contract at £74.20 a month. I then haggled and got it down to just £48.10!!!! I reckon I also could have got them to waive the Admin fee and chucked in 20 free passes or so. Quote this deal from "Mike" at Bromsgrove club and you should get this deal too!!

    Money saving love,

    George

I've been trying to get my partner signed up at David LLoyd, after I joined in December for £50. For the same membership I have they now want over £80 a month. Any attempts so far to haggle have been thrown out the window - does anyone know if they do have the power to set their own price or is it all set by head office?

    Many thanks.

Hi all. My gym membership at my local council gym has just expired. I want to renew and the best deal I have found is on thegymwebsite. As I am renewing membership I'd rather just deal with the gym directly otherwise it looks like I'll have to fill in all the forms, pay an admin fee, get new passes and do the induction all over again. The offer on thegymwebsite is nothing like anything offered in the gym's own literature. If I speak to the gym directly and tell them the offer I have seen online will they even know what I'm talking about? Are gyms generally aware of thegymwebsite? Are they willing to match the deals on there?
  • Hi,

I am trying to join the Virgin Active Classic in Twickenham and tried the best to bring the membership fee down from £79 but it seems to be impossible. Anyone joined there recently? Or any tips on how to get a better deal. Wanna join with my wife but £69 per person is the max we can afford.
  • Hello

I have been doing British Military fitness recently. If you live in E/SE London there is an offer on selected parks at the moment to get sessions for free until end March.

I am not allowed by the administrator to post the link(!) but if you google "britmilfit / playsport" its the top link on google

    I have recently joined PureGym

Its cheap at £17 a month and open 24/7. Good selection of machines. The signup is all online and I never had to meet a staff member to join up - and infact I have never spoken to a staff member in the 7 odd times I have been there - there is no reception.

On the downside its no frills (no pool, sauna, steam room etc) and it gets busy - very busy. Infact I went there at 8pm the other day and it was packed. I wouldn;t even consider going there between 5.30 - 8 now. They don't really have proper classes like other gyms from what I have seen so far.

Overall if you just want somewhere to do cardio and weights then its worth considering.

There haven't been any since they went into administration and were subject to a mgt takeover in Oct last year.

They were my nearest gym and I liked it there, but refused to renew at the 70% increase in prices! I am still monitoring, as I think they will either go bust due to such price increases (and such massive loss of customer base that has been reported so far as a result), or hopefully come to their senses and start offering realistic deals.

I would happily rejoin if they did that.
