Quick one - I have signed up for the Fitness First 7 day trial

A few years back I did a 1 day thing and got a MASSIVE sales pitch and literally 30+ missed calls from the salesman after I had my 1 day trial

Is it going to be much of the same again?

    Club is Southampton this time.

Do you normally have to give your bank details etc when you go to see them?

DO NOT give you bank details unless you intend to commit to a contract. You'll either end up paying for an agreement you didn't agree to, or your bank details will end up on someone else's membership.....

That said, free passes for any duration are a sales tool - expect contact, but you could give a fake phone # although if they are over enthusiastic with sales calls, you could remind them about harassment.

Personally I use BMF (Brit Mil Fit) which is awesome and a great tonic of fun and exercise! :j Bring on the burpees!
However, in this cold weather a friend of mine has just joined 'The Gym' who have gyms in Guildford, Hounslow, Liverpool, Manchester and Vauxhall. There is apparently no contract and it's only £14.99 a month online for a no frills gym (no sauna, steam room etc). You would need to check the website for full details and locations as it might not suit everyone.
    Cheers!

Is this the same as 'Pure gym'? they are opening one up in my town but I like the classes and its not v clear if there will be a definite timetable. Apart from that its £12.99 per month so a bargain for just gym users!

Hi has anyone else seen the advert with LA where they say no contract and no sign on fee. I looked up my gym, originally it said 10 weeks at £99 no sign on now it says £99 plus £22 sign on???!

I'm really confused. Everytime I call the try and pass me to membership advisor as they say a yr is cheaper but I don't want a contract.

Has anyone tried curves, does it work??

I recommend being very cautious with these deals. Last year the ads said '£99 for 3 months'. I joined online and made a oneoff payment for £99, thinking they would charge me the equivalent of £33 paond for 3 months which would be enough for me give it a go and see if I could stick at it for 3 months before committing. The following month I had an other £99 taken out, it turned out the (very) small print said £99 pounds a month for 3 months. I rang and complained so the gave me my monehy back and knocked £5 a month off a standard membership. On the plus side, despite being a lazy wimp, I'm still visiting 4-5 times a week
Total Wins 2011: Zilch :( :wall:
  • Hey everyone I have just bought a membership at Club Moativation Shepperton through Thegymwebsite and saved myself a fortune!
The full price is £60 per month but I got it for £31 a month and saved a another £7.50 on month one by using the MSE voucher code “discount25”
Now all I have to do is actually use the gym!

    Wish me luck!!
  • It's definately worth checking thegymwebsite.co.uk to see if there are any gyms in your area on there you fancy.

After enquiring about a gym in my area I saw on the site, I went to view the gym and was told membership is £91 a month. On the website, it was £65 with a rolling month contract. Not only was Andrew kind enough to warn me that this was rising to £72 with a £40 admin fee within the next day or so (which even if I got the starting fee at £65, I'd have to pay after the first month), he also managed to negotiate my next monthly payments at only £66.50 rather than the £71.50 it would be.

I also managed to use the discount25 code to get 25% off the starting payment. So rather than paying £91 straight through the gym, or £71.50 + £40 admin fee, with subsequent payments being £71.50 through the site, I managed to pay £48 initially with subsequent payments being £66.50.

    Very pleased!

James thanks for your kind comments - its Andrew here. We really try to offer a good service on thegymwebsite.co.uk. We really need to recruit more clubs so if anyone has any good ideas I would love to hear them.

nsmith45 thanks for your comments I really like MSE when we get positive feedback. You probably picked one of the best deals we do on thegymwebsite.co.uk but generally all the Club Moativation deals are good. I think hotel clubs are probably the best kept secret in the gym business - you get hotel standard service, the clubs are usually quiet with good facilities if you choose carefully, free parking and you can use the hotels bars and restaurants. Most hotel clubs also give you a discount on food and drinks. Check out Q hotels, LivingWell and Spirit clubs!
  • LA Fitness are continually changing their prices and deals on their website. Check out the deals at the end of the month when they are more desparate for sales. Check the small print.
  • My 17-year-old daughter wanted to improve her fitness prior to joining the RAF. I signed her up for the free 3-day pass at the LA fitness gym in Fareham Hants. They called her the next day telling her to go in to the gym the following day to book her sessions. When she turned up, one of their staff told her that she didn't look like the type who would buy a membership so she couldn't have the free 3-day pass. They were very rude and she was quite upset.
