Hi all looking for cheap gym membership having left Virgin active.(over crowded over priced) Based near Ilford so any hints would be great, looking for free weights mostly.

Wondered how much it would cost to hire smith machine and squat rack with set of weights???? A few of us at work could then create our own gym??

Just had my induction at The Gym Group today. It's only £16 a month (plus a £20 joining fee I think) and you're not tied in to a contract either. They consider themselves no frills so they don't have a sauna or swimming pool but all gym equipment is modern and they're also open 24/7. Obviously I've only been once today so far but I couldn't see any reason not to mention them.

Also can anyone recommend any good iPod personal trainer apps so I can make the most of my use in the gym?

This may sound a little pompous but just remember that the clientele of these cheap gyms will match the fees charged. We have joined TheGym Group in Nottingham and to be honest it is the pits. Full of young students just hanging around ogling the girls and sitting on the equipment. The changing rooms are a mess in the mornings because they don't employ cleaners. The "instructors" have to go around and clean up and they all leave about 8pm so after that it is open house. You can buy anything you want in the changing rooms, if you get my drift. It is warm there are showers, and it is open 24 hours, what more could a down and out ask for for £10 a month.
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

I never thought of it like that before! Thanks- you've possibly saved me £120 for next years fees! Will continue to aim higher- I spend a lot of my free time in the gym and cleanliness is number one on my list (followed by working equiptment, attitude of other members, staff customer service and knowledge and safty of my stuff when in lockers, I get the feeling none of this is on offer at the 24 hour gyms then...)

Sounds almost as bad as the 4 skin infections I gathered from a weeks trial at Fitness First!
  • Myself and husband have a joint membership at our local devere hotel and we have been there for just over 3 years. We are currently on a corporate rate due to where hubby works and we pay £46 a month.

We received a letter at the weekend advising due to VAT increase - minumum wage increasing and a marginal increase in costs our membership will rise to £75 a month !!! That seems a very steep rise of 63% and we now have to find an additional £348 a year.

We really like it there and we do use it but abit peeved that we have received such a steep rise. Coincidentally we are also having a refurb soon !!!

Any ideas on whether there is anything I co do ? I dont mind some rise in fees but 63% !!!

    Thanks

Funnily enough Stoneman so have I and I regularly train in and outside of 'manned' hours and have found it to be the best gym I have used in Nottingham and as an 'experienced' exerciser I have used a few.....It is consistently clean, spacious changing rooms, Personal Trainers and members of staff are always happy to help and say hello and the variety and number of pieces of kit is second to none given the price paid (£9.99 per month and no admin fee as I joined pre sale :))

I can also confirm that the gym Nottingham does have cleaners as they are often in the gym when I am working out!!

P.S - I am also no down and out as you would obviously presume given your statement at the bottom of your post!

    Hello all,

If someone can shed some light on this I would be extremely grateful.

I'm currently working between Southampton, Manchester & Warwick and need access to a gym at all three locations. I have spoken to David Lloyd, Esporta and LA fitness all of which have gyms in these three locations.

The prices seem to vary dramatically from £51- £128 a month (David Lloyd)

Does anyone else have gym membership which covers use in all gyms and if so how much does it cost?

    Many thanks
