I've read what's been said on this forum about bartering with gym memberships and am sure it must be possible as they don't list any price on site or in the gym, but I can't seem to get them to budge, what am I doing wrong?

I've been to the gym, two days before the month end as advised, and after a look round said I was looking to join, what are the fees. I then asked what they'd be next month (two days) and they said they didn't know yet. I asked if there was any flexiblitity on the price and was told no. I said it seemed expensive and needed to think so would call them, they let me walk away.

I rang today, found the deals are just about the same (they are giving August for free, same as if u pay by virgin CC) but still no scope to move the price. Again I've said I'll take a look at other optiions and they happily wish me well and let me go.

Are we sure there's scope for a bargain here?

Know for fact they don't barter. Sorry!

    Anyone?

I really like the idea of a 24/7 gym (although the fact that they're unstaffed at night would concern me as the reason I want a 24 hour gym is because I sleep weird hours) and there's on opening nearish me, so I might look into it. Thanks for the link!
Never argue with an idiot; they'll bring you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

I go to the one in Vauxhall. It's spacious and well equipment. Although very packed during peak hours. I tend to go weird hours anyway.
  • Those of you who are over 50...many gyms class his as "Senior Membership" and it is cheaper - but they don't always point out the different rates when you apply. I have just adjusted mine - and saved £7.50 per month.

Join Any Gym through Globalfit.com and save 50%. Its asks you for insurance provider. If its not there just choose one, they dont ask for any proof.
  • A word of warning before taking up a free trial or reduced-cost 3-month membership. Don't sign anything or pay the club any money without checking what it will commit you to.

Just because it's a trial membership doesn't mean you are free of any commitment. Always ask what happens near or at the end of the trial period - and get this in writing. Do you have to give notice that you want the trial to end? If you don't do this you may automatically signed up to a full or extended membership?

Also, don't take anything on completely trust that said to you by the sales person. If it's not written down in the contact then there's nothing you can do if the sales person misleads you. You could try taking them to court for miss-selling, but how can you prove what was said unless you recorded the sales meeting.

Finally, be honest with yourself. Have you been a member of Gym before. How often did you use it? Lots in the first couple of months then hardly at all after a few months? My gym claims to have about 2500 members. If they were all using the gym 2-3 times a week the place would be ram-packed all the time - but it isn't!

Only after considering all of these points should you sign up. Many gyms hold people to the contract and may take you to court if you cancel the direct debit while in contract. Do you really need the stress and legal costs of this? We're only talking about Gym membership after all.

none put prices on their website as far as I am aware- they do this for reasons unknown- seems to be the unsaid law of the gym!

Best way is to call up a gym, say your interested in joining but would appreciate a free trial to see what the place is like- do the free trial and then you will get the chance to ask prices. No one will lock you into a contract without fully informing you on the prices first to which you can refuse if you feel the price is too high
