I saw 3 different GP's before getting my diagnosis (all within the same practice) the first 2 just told me to go away to loose weight - I'd gone because I'd put 5 stone on in 12 months!!!

Turned out after blood tests that I have PCOS and with tablets and the GI diet I actually lost weight.

Definitely ask to see a different doctor, also take some research with you as at my 3rd visit I took a newspaper article that covered all my symptoms.

    Hi

Not read all the replies so I'm sure I am probably suggesting what others have!

About 7 years ago I went to the doctor having been feeling really unwell for a few months, I was also getting really bad dizzy spells too. He suggested I take travel sick tablets to ease the dizziness because he said it sounded like an imbalance and sent me on my way!

Well they never worked and this went on for months longer, I am not one for going to the doc unless I feel really poorly, and after the last visit i was realuctant to go back until people were noticing how ill i was looking. I was exhausted the whole time, I would start work at 6am, be home for 3.30pm fall asleep until about 5pm and go to bed at 6.30-7pm and that would be me until the next morning. I was so depressed with everything had no motivation and just didn't feel like myself.

Eventually I asked to speak to a different doc and requested a female I sat down and burst into tears as I really had had enough and was starting to think there was something serious wrong with me. I explained my symptoms to her and straight away she knew what was wrong, an underactive thyroid. She done loads of tests just to be on the safe side and gave me proper medication for my dizzy spells (she looked unamused when I told her about my previous visit with her colleague!).

I now take thyroxine every day and feel so much better-although my experience is that is has taken a long time to get to this point. I actually ended up leaving that practice as the female doc left and I just lost faith in them, (my new practice is wonderful!).

There could be other causes for the way you are feeling but request a different doc-it is not normal to feel like the way you are!

Take care and good luck x

  • Hey you,

Am mad on your behalf as your Dr is awful. Have you got a friendly Practise Nurse you could talk to? My practise nurse is so much better, I dont often bother with the GP unless she has to sign off a prescription!

I went through a tough time and was 'diagnosed' with TATT = Tired All The Time...kinda wanted to have something wrong, so could fix it and move on - instead told it was my lifestyle...to be fair she ran just about every test under the sun...I was border-line anaemic though, so told to take a vegetarian multi-vitamin daily to boost that...

Apart from the obvious feeling down, have you got any worries/stress? Never underestimate the effect that can have...are you sleeping ok?

Have you had a food allergy test? You may have an intollerance that is causing all this. I'm not one to jump on the intollerance band wagon, but it can really help knowing which foods to avoid - apples and coconut and when you look at package food ingredients, both crop up in all sorts that you may not expect.

It sounds from the comments already posted that your symptoms may point to something more than these...so I'd recommend asking for a second opinion from a GP or a consultation with your Practise Nurse.

You sound so sad, that I'm going to send HUGE HUGS with this and hope that you find a solution very soon...afterall...tomorrow, is another day! x

Thanks once again for your replies, if it wasn't for your help I don't know what I'd do. My dh just thinks I'm stupid for even listening to the doctor but doctors are the very people that you're supposed to listen to.

I am definately not going to see that GP again, there's about 4 others at the practice but because I'm new I don't know who's best. I'm picking up my blood results from last summer tomorrow so might just ask the receptionist.

Itchie Feet, I'm pretty sure it's not an allergy/intolerance as I am already severly allergic to dairy, kiwi and nuts and when I was younger (about 3) every type of food was tested with me before diagnosis. Thinking about what someone else said about the b12 occuring in dairy, my GP never even mentioned that and it is a big factor I think because I eat absolutely no dairy.

I'm feeling a little better now and it's my 1st official weigh in at fat club tomorrow so will go to that just so I know I'm doing all I can until the blood tests come back.
Lead me not into temptation, I can find the way myself.

wins - peroni bottle opener, peroni bowl, peroni coastersx2 and a vodkat cocktail kit,
would love to win something 'proper'!!
  • If that was the GP you were most easily able to get an appointment with in a new practice there's a reason for that :) try to find the busiest one even if you have to book weeks ahead - there's a reason they're busy!

Good point, I used to do that at my old practice and wait 3 weeks for an appointment.
I got this GP within 40 mins of ringing! I don't know what I was thinking!

You might have seen a locum, try asking the receptionist which GP has a particular interest in weight problems.

how about you throw your energy into sticking to your diet and losing some weight, perhaps go swimming with your daughter or take her to the park to play.
When you are slim, things might feel a whole lot different. and you wont have spent lots of time searching for a doctor who will tell you what you want to hear.

yes there is. usually understaffed, under equiped, not likely to make referrals without a fight...loads of reasons.

Your doctor is a pillock. I used to go hill walking on Sundays and would be out from sunrise till sundown. My GP told me that didn't count as exercise because everybody walks. I was complaining of being up a hill and struggling to breathe and having to turn back. He said I needed to do some 'proper' exercise. I had asthma.

Definitely ask to see another GP. And be kind to yourself. Whatever is going on at the moment will get sorted when you speak to a decent GP. x
    No he isnt a pillock.
You might have been struggling to breath but that doesnt mean it was because the exercise is doing any good. it just means youre not fit.
In order to lose weight you need to do aerobic exercises which all increase your heart rate. walking, whilst it can increase heart rate, is not enough in aerobic terms.
the best exercise in this category is swimming because it also works all your muscles and joints. (sex too)
if you eat a good, balanced diet (and yes, you can eat cake and sausages) and get good aerobic exercise you will lose weight in no time but far too many people think they need to walk a marathon, weigh out every portion of food and avoid all the things they like in order to lose weight. they wont ever get there like that.
if you are overweight its more than likely that that is causing you to feel asthmatic and will go away when you are slim.
