Hi
The title is a little confusing but I didn't know what to write.
In Sept 09 I went to my old GP (we've moved areas) complaining with constantly feeling tired and gaining weight. She thought that I may have an underactive thyroid because my neck was 'full' looking so sent bloods off to be tested.
They came back saying that I didn't have a thyroid problem but did have a b12 deficiency.
I was then prescribed b12 injections every 3 months. I went for the 1st month.
Felling constantly tired again I went to visit my new GP and asked if I could have another injection (I already have the actual vial of b12) but he said that I couldn't possibly have b12 aneamia as I am not thin enough.
I mentioned that whatever I do I constantly keep gaining weight, for example this week I have started slimming world and stuck to it because the only person who suffers if I don't is me and have gained 4 pounds in less than a week!
I did slimming world in 2008 and lost 3 stones so I know it works.
The GP said that I need to cut to 1000 calories a day and that I should stop making excuses for my weight gain but that he would arrange for more blood tests just to prove I don't have b12 deficiency.
I am so upset. I got out of the surgery and burst into tears in the car park in front of my 2 year old and haven't stopped since.
I just don't know what to do. I have tried everything and nothing is working anymore. I feel so down all the time and have started to stop going out unless it's absolutely necessary.
I am 5ft 4 and now weigh 11st despite weighing 10st 11 on weds.

It does sound like an underactive thyroid, well sounds like mine anyway. I had problems for a long time before I was diagnosed, had a test that was fine and then kept getting told it was menopause, depression or whatever. Eventually they did another test and told me to call for a result in a week, got a call within 24 hours asking me to contact surgery urgently, when I did they asked me to go straight round. Apparently my thyroid level was very low. Dr said it must have felt like swimming through treacle, which was quite a good description. I think it sometimes takes a while for hypothyroidim to show up on a blood test, I am not very scientific but it is to do with one type of thyroid overcompensating or something for the other so it read OK for a while. I would seriously ask for another thyroid test. When you get the thyroxine it is like magic, you know you are tired but it is only when you start taking the thyroxine that you realise how bad you felt. The weight loss is an added bonus, with me it has been slow and steady but I haven't tried to lose any. Good luck.Sell £1500

I would definitely go and see another GP and let them know exactly how the first made you feel. How awful for you - having worked with many GP's I know that some of them have atrocious bedside manner.
Did the first B12 injection help at all? We used to have patients who said that they knew when they coming towards the end of the month as they felt really tired.
Remember, you don't have to explain yourself to the receptionist - just ask for an appointment with someone else. Or perhaps wait for the results to come back and see someone else as they will be able to advise you better.
And do look into the pregnancy - my assistant in work went through months of being tired and quite sick but was adamant she wasn't pg. She then found out she 6 months gone!A very busy Yummy Mummy to a 1 year old gorgeous boy :smileyhea

I work in physical activity in the NHS and I advocate a low glycaemic index lifestyle rather than Slimming World to my weight management clients. You presumably want to lose bodyfat not simply weight (muscle/ bone/ water) and you presumably want to remain healthy whilst doing so?
IMO food combining can deprive the body of essential nutrients: if you are already feeling under the weather this could be a disaster. You should absolutely NOT cut your calorie intake to 1000 per day, it is exceptionally difficult to get all the nutrients you need and your metabolism WILL drop.
I would recommend you keep a really accurate food and exercise diary for a week, that means writing down everything (food and drink) that passes your lips, including what brand you chose and the quantity (weighed and measured). It is important you eat normally and do not diet whilst you are doing the food diary, and that you fill it in as you go along not at the end of the day. Then take this diary to either a nurse or another doctor in the practice, change practices if you have to! It is exceptionally difficult to gain four pounds of fat in a week, it would mean a hormonal imbalance (thyroid, PCOS etc.) OR overeating massively/ drinking loads of alcohol OR you are actually gaining water and not fat.
PM me if you think I could help any further.Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0 -
Hi boltonangel, sorry I don't have any real advice but know how crap the medical profession can make you feel when your over weight. I do slimming world ( not so much as I'm expecting ) keep it up and prove them wrong. Try and see another doctor.
The doctor is a silly :mad:ding-dong:mad:. can't swear here. He spent 5 years in medical training to see that by looking at someone that they can or can't have a medical condition that requires a blood test? gosh next he be telling me this weeks lotto numbers!
You know something is wrong. Take a friend or partner with you next time when you make your next appointment ( I know it sounds lame, but I was forever bringin ds back and forth to the g.p with his chest, took my husband who said I want a name of a chest specialist and I want to pay, did we get a referral to the hospital and lo he has asthma bad ) . Write all your symtoms down, how you feel, past history and how long this has been going long. Say what you would like i.e more blood test or just to be listened to about how you feel.
Now you are trying with you weight that is a good foundation, keep it up and make a cup of tea and call a friend for support. Good luck and hang in there.0
