i thought ya had to put chicken in a heated oven not a cold one as the slow rise in temperature as oven heats causes bacteria to grow. ive had campylorbactor from take away chicken before .... thought i was dying...

  • Campylobacter food poisoning is not nice, once had never forgotten

Have to remember though that over 70% of supermarket chicken in the UK is contaminated with campylobacter and salmonella bacteria as a result of slaughtering process. So it's vital that chicken is cooked thoroughly to a high enough temperature to kill off the bugs that are more likely to be present than not.

If you put raw chicken into a cold oven to cook it, then you will get bug growth, but as the oven reaches its temperature, the bugs will get killed off. However, it's important to make sure that the chicken is cooked right the way through, so that all the bugs are destroyed and don't pose the risk of food poisoning.

It's better for a meal to be too hot as you can let it cool down, rather than it be lukewarm and full of bugs that can cause you harm....
  • As it says on the tin really!

If I cooked some chicken breasts on a tuesday, how long will they keep for without freezing?

    Hi SS,

I would keep cooked chicken chilled in the fridge for a maximum of three days. There's an earlier thread discussing this so I've added your thread to it to keep the replies together.

Bf and I had a roast chicken for dinner Saturday night. I picked the carcass clean and put the extra meat in the fridge.

How long will it keep for, assuming I eat it cold (not reheated), or making sure I reheat it thoroughly before eating it.

Could I freeze some of it tonight?

Bf said it should have been eaten yesterday or get thrown out, but I'm sure that's overly-cautious.
  • I heated up some leftover chicken in some leftover sauce last night. The chicken had been bought cooked last Monday, so thats 6 days in my fridge.

    I am still here!

    HI,
I would usually still eat it after 2 days.

If you don't want to eat it so soon (as you get bored with the taste), I would make soup (boil it with carrot, parsnip, onion, peppercorns etc...), then pick all the meat off the bones and freeze it. Then when you want the soup you can just defrost it during the day and finish it with either stock cube or whatever. That is what I do. (best if you need quick tasty lunch for example at the weekends..)

I plan to eat some pork i cooked on Friday tonight, if i die ill let you know :rotfl:

I'd certainly eat chicken after 2 days.

Saying that but im abit stupid, i'd eat chicken regardless of how long it had been in the fridge because i'd rather risk the chicken rather than throw it away. :rotfl:

3 days no probs. 5 days usually okay - inspect and sniff though to be sure. However I have to admit to often having week old old cooked chicken with no ill effects at all (I must have a really cold fridge)
