How long does cooked chicken keep for?

  • Simple answer is yes... as cooking extends the life of the product by another few days - so its safe to eat. I have had chicken +2 days after the "use by" and cooked and carried on using it for another few days in pasta based meals.

But please don't live by the use by, sell by dates.. use the nose and tounge ;)

    Hi headcrash,

I would think it will be fine so long as it's kept properly chilled. If you are unsure at all, give it a sniff and if it smells ok then taste a little bit. My general rule is if it looks, smells and tastes ok and is not way beyond it's use by date then it will probably be ok to eat.

Alternatively if you don't think you are going to use it for a few days you could always freeze it until you need it.

Most importantly...if you reheat it, get it past 60 degrees for a good time to kill bacteria.
Don't just warm it up a bit.

Right! bought a whoopsie chicken on todays last date. I have cooked it today and it is now cold sitting in my fridge. We would like cold sliced chicken for tea tomorrow. Now the bit I want to know is... when can I boil the bones bit in the SC for a chicken casserole? If I do it tomorrow to save having the bones hanging around it would have been cooked twice to cool down so we could have it for dinner on Friday ( 3 times heated up). Do you think I should wait till Friday and cook the bones, veg, etc and eat on the same day? (2 times heated up but chicken getting old)?

    I hope this reads ok?

I think I will just eat the cold chicken and bin the rest.

er - bin it?no way!!! a cooked chicken should keep for two to three days in fridge. if you use the meat next day and boil the bones - cool them - they should keep for another 3 days. and you can freeze cooked chicken you know! just dont freeze another made dish with pre-frozen cooked chicken!

    Hi Julie,

I hope you haven't binned it! I would eat the cold sliced chicken tomorrow, strip the carcass and keep the meat in the fridge until Friday so that you can use the bones for stock now. I would keep cooked chicken, providing it was chilled quickly, in the fridge for up to three days too.

There's an earlier thread with more opinions that should help so I'll add your thread to it to keep the suggestions together.

Julie , you never binned them did you?! Sometimes I have great intentions of using up the chicken bones, but never get round to it, so I now have a little box full in the freezer building up so I can make a big pot of stock in one go. If in any doubt, just pop the bones in the freezer!
A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men

  • we were home to late today to make dinner so had something out and roasted it when we got home, cooled it and put it in fridge ready to re heat tomorrow for another stab at sunday dinner. then remebered i had something else planned too eat so son wants to cook as planned and plate mine up ready for me to have for dinner on tuesday night. but will this be ok? obviously it will only be veg and potatoes going on my plate as my chicken would not be reheated until tuesday when i would be reheated everything else, but will the chicken still be ok by then? i dont want to waste it???

Tuesday will be fine. It should be okay till Wednesday so long as you chilled it correctly.
